HIFU · Cartridges · Pacific Plaza
This HIFU Singapore guide explains the parts of a HIFU treatment that brochures name but seldom explain: what the machine actually does, which layer each cartridge depth reaches, why some platforms show the tissue on a screen and others do not, and what labels such as 4D or 7D mean. It is written so you can read a treatment plan, or a quote, and know what you are being offered. Dr Sin Yong uses the same questions when he plans HIFU at Atelier.
HIFU, sometimes written "hi fu", stands for high-intensity focused ultrasound. The transducer in the handpiece shapes ultrasound the way a lens shapes light, so that the energy meets at one point a set distance below the skin. There it heats a spot about the size of a grain of rice to roughly 60–70 °C, while the tissue it passes through on the way is spared. Each pass of the handpiece leaves a row of these points, called a line.
The heated tissue contracts, and the healing that follows lays down new collagen, so a HIFU treatment works gradually rather than on the day. That is also why the depth matters so much: the machine only heats the layer its cartridge is built to reach. The treatment itself, and who it is planned for, is on the HIFU treatment page.
Clinic devices are medical devices, used after a doctor's assessment. Units sold for beauty salons or home use differ in depth, energy and oversight, and in Singapore medical devices are regulated by the Health Sciences Authority.
Cartridges
A cartridge, or transducer, fixes the depth of the focal point. Lower frequencies reach deeper. The common facial depths are below; some platforms add a 2.0 mm cartridge for thinner zones.
| Depth | Layer reached | Typical use | Cannot do |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.5 mm | Upper dermis | Thin areas such as around the brow and eyes; skin firmness | Reach the SMAS or change fat |
| 2.0 mm (some platforms) | Dermis | Brow, forehead and other thinner zones | Lift descended tissue |
| 3.0 mm | Deeper dermis | Firmness where tissue is too thin for 4.5 mm, such as parts of the neck | Lift descended tissue or replace volume |
| 4.5 mm | SMAS, the support layer a surgical facelift repositions | Jawline, lower cheek and under the chin, over enough soft tissue | Treat a hollow or a full fat pad; used only over adequate tissue |
Platform Types
HIFU machines share one physics but differ in three ways that matter to you.
Shot counts do not transfer between machines either, because a "shot" is defined differently on each. Named platforms, including ones not offered at Atelier, are compared in Ultherapy Prime vs Ultraformer MPT vs Shurink. Dr Sin Yong holds a Key Opinion Leader appointment with CLASSYS.
Who It Suits
HIFU suits early to moderate looseness of the jawline, under the chin, the neck or a low brow, in a face with enough soft tissue over the bone. It is not the tool for a face that is mainly hollow, heavy with fat or carrying surplus skin; what HIFU cannot do explains why, and HIFU disadvantages covers the trade-offs. Treatment is deferred or reconsidered in pregnancy, with active infection, open wounds or flaring acne in the area, with metal implants or implanted devices in the field, and with a tendency to keloid scars.
Reading A Plan
A clear plan names five things, and two plans can only be compared when all five match:
At Atelier, Dr SY feels skin and fat thickness zone by zone before choosing depths, and gel contact is checked as he goes, since poor contact stops the energy focusing where intended. The appointment is described step by step on what to expect: HIFU, recovery on HIFU downtime, and the factors behind a quote on how we quote. The outcome is judged at about three months.
