What a Nose Thread Lift Can and Cannot Do

Nose thread lift in Singapore adds definition along the bridge and support at the tip. It is not a substitute for rhinoplasty, and we will say so.

A nose thread lift places a small number of dissolvable PDO (polydioxanone) threads under the skin of the nose through one tiny entry point at the tip, using a blunt cannula. Threads laid along the columella, the column of tissue between the nostrils, act as a strut that supports and lifts the tip. Threads laid along the dorsum sharpen the line of the bridge. Over the following weeks the body forms collagen around each thread, so the definition settles gradually rather than appearing all at once.

The limits matter as much as the effect. Threads cannot make a nose smaller, remove a dorsal hump, narrow the nasal bones, straighten a markedly deviated septum or improve breathing. Those are surgical questions. If your goal is one of them, a consultation at Atelier Aesthetics will tell you plainly, and you will not be offered threads as a compromise.

The people who suit a nose thread lift usually have a low or soft bridge, a tip that lacks support or dips when they smile, and a wish for a subtle, temporary change they can judge before committing to anything permanent. Skin thickness changes the result. Thick, oily tip skin, common in Asian noses, hides some of the definition. Very thin skin shows the threads more easily. Both are assessed before anything is planned.

Threads give the nose a line and a little support. They do not give it a new shape, and they are not a cheaper rhinoplasty.

Where the Threads Go

Four Points of Refinement

Strut
Columella
Threads placed upright in the columella support the tip from below, which is where most of the visible lift comes from.
Tip
Projection
With support underneath, the tip can sit slightly higher and more forward. The change is millimetres, not a new tip shape.
Bridge
Dorsal Line
Threads along the dorsum sharpen the bridge line seen from the front. They add little height on their own.
Radix
Between the Eyes
Threads do little at the radix. Where height is needed here, a small amount of filler usually serves better, and the two can be combined.

Threads or Filler

Choosing the Right Tool for Your Nose

Threads and filler solve different problems. Threads give a line and support: they suit a tip that needs lifting and a bridge that needs a crisper edge. Nose fillers give height at a point: they suit a low radix, a dip in the bridge or a profile that needs building in one place. Many noses need only one; some benefit from both, placed a few weeks apart so the first result can settle before the second is planned.

Safety is part of the choice. The nose has a terminal blood supply that connects with the vessels of the eye, and filler injected into a vessel here can cause skin damage and, rarely, loss of vision. That risk is documented in the medical literature and is the reason filler in the nose is placed deep, slowly and in small amounts. Threads are placed with a blunt cannula in the plane above the cartilage, which lowers the vascular risk but does not remove every risk; threads have their own, which are set out below. For a fuller discussion of filler risk, see how safe nose filler is and whether non-surgical rhinoplasty is right for your nose.

How the Treatment Runs

01
Consultation and photographs
Dr. Sin Yong examines your nose from the front, side and below, checks skin thickness and tip support, and asks about previous surgery, implants and filler. Photographs are taken for planning and review.
02
Marking and numbing
The thread paths are marked with you sitting upright. The tip and the paths are numbed with local anaesthetic.
03
Placement
Through one small entry point at the tip, each thread is guided into position by cannula. The number of threads is decided by your anatomy, not a package. The skin is checked for dimpling before you sit up.
04
The first days
Expect swelling and tenderness. Do not press, pinch or massage the nose. Avoid resting heavy glasses on the bridge for about two weeks, and avoid strenuous exercise, saunas and alcohol for the first few days. Sleep face-up for the first nights if you can.
05
Review at about two weeks
Once the swelling has settled, the result is reviewed against your photographs. This is also when any wish to add filler or repeat in future is discussed.

Risks Worth Knowing

Most people have only swelling, tenderness and sometimes bruising. Less often, a thread can be felt or seen under thin skin, the result can be uneven, a thread end can work its way towards the surface at the tip, or the area can become infected. These are usually manageable, and occasionally a thread has to be removed. Contact the clinic promptly if pain increases after the first two days, if redness spreads, if there is discharge, or if you feel a thread end at the skin.

The risk of complications rises with previous nasal surgery, implants and poorly controlled skin conditions, which is why they are screened for at consultation. A nose thread lift is a medical procedure performed by a doctor, under the Singapore Medical Council's guidelines on aesthetic practice.

FAQ

Nose Thread Lift — Common Questions

Ask a Question
PDO threads dissolve over roughly six months. Some definition can remain after that because of the collagen that forms around each thread, but the effect is temporary and varies from person to person. Many patients choose to repeat it; we discuss that at your review rather than in advance.
No. Threads add support and definition. They cannot remove a hump, narrow the nasal bones or reduce the size of the nose. Those changes need surgical rhinoplasty, and we will tell you so at consultation.
The tip is numbed with local anaesthetic first, which stings briefly. During placement most people feel pressure and movement rather than sharp pain. The nose is usually tender for a few days afterwards.
Expect swelling at the tip and along the bridge for several days, sometimes with bruising. Most people return to work within a few days. Avoid pressing or massaging the nose, resting heavy glasses on the bridge for about two weeks, and strenuous exercise or saunas for the first few days.
It depends on what was done. A nose with a silicone or Gore-Tex implant is generally not suitable, because threads near an implant raise the risk of infection and extrusion. Other operated noses are assessed case by case, with more caution than an unoperated nose.
Threads suit a nose that needs tip support and a sharper bridge line. Filler suits a nose that needs height at a particular point, such as the radix. Some noses benefit from both, staged a few weeks apart. The decision is made after examining your skin, cartilage and profile.
