HIFU Aftercare —
Cool, Plain And Unhurried

HIFU heats tissue several millimetres beneath an intact surface, so there is no wound to dress. Aftercare is about comfort, plain skincare and sun protection while tenderness fades, and knowing which signs need Dr Sin Yong to see you early.

Day One

1. The First 24 Hours

Book a Consultation

Expect warmth and redness for a few hours, and a tender jaw. No dressing is needed, and normal daily activity is fine. The HIFU treatment page explains the plan; HIFU downtime shows how you are likely to look day by day.

Do

  • Rest a clean, cool compress lightly on the cheeks or jawline when they feel warm.
  • Cleanse with lukewarm water and a mild, non-foaming wash, then add a plain moisturiser.
  • Take paracetamol for tenderness, if it is suitable for you.
  • Follow the written aftercare you are given; it takes priority over this page.

Avoid

  • Pressing, rubbing or massaging the treated lines.
  • Saunas, steam rooms, hot yoga, heavy exercise and very hot water on the face.
  • Alcohol for the rest of the day.
  • Anti-inflammatory painkillers, unless the clinic has advised them, as they may add to bruising.

Days Two To Seven

2. The First Week

Keep heat, pressure and friction off the treated areas while tenderness fades.

  • Leave facial massage alone for a few days.
  • No facials, gua sha, microcurrent or home devices on the face this week.
  • Waxing or threading on treated skin waits until the tenderness has gone.
  • Sleep face-up while the jawline is sore (see the questions below).

Skin And Sun

3. Skincare And Sun Protection

Keep the routine to cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen. Retinoids, exfoliating acids, vitamin C serums and scrubs stay out until the skin feels normal again, and no new active product starts in the first week.

Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen each morning, reapply outdoors, and wear a hat on bright days. Heated skin reacts more readily, and in Fitzpatrick III to V skin ultraviolet light can lead to pigment change. No deliberate tanning while the face is tender.

Everyday Life

4. Exercise, Swimming And Make-Up

Exercise. Walking is fine from the next day. Heavy exercise, saunas and hot yoga wait at least 24 hours, and longer if the jaw is still swollen or tender; your written aftercare sets the timing.

Swimming. Stay out of chlorinated pools until any redness has gone.

Make-up. Usually fine from the next day, once redness and warmth have calmed. Apply and remove it without rubbing, and leave it a day longer if the face is still red, warm or tender.

Your follow-up. Early firmness is not the result. Book no other energy treatment over the same areas before you are seen again at about three months.

Safety

5. When To Contact The Clinic

Jaw tenderness is common and settles by itself. The signs below are different: contact the clinic the same day, rather than waiting for your next scheduled visit.

  • Numbness or tingling that persists or is not improving.
  • A change in how your face moves: an uneven smile, difficulty pursing the lips, or a brow that will not lift.
  • A blister, a burn mark, or a raised welt or line along a treated row that does not flatten or turns dusky or dark.
  • Swelling that is marked, increasing or on one side only.
  • Pain that is getting worse, or skin that becomes hot, red and tight.
  • A new dent or hollow in the cheek or temple.

WhatsApp the clinic on +65 8023 7170 (Monday to Saturday, 11:00–20:00), saying when you were treated and which areas. Out of hours, if a sign is urgent, do not wait for a reply: go to the nearest hospital emergency department. Slurred speech, weakness of an arm or leg, a change in vision or difficulty breathing is an emergency at any hour: call 995. HIFU complications and complication care explain each problem.

FAQ

HIFU Aftercare — Common Questions

Ask a Question
Paracetamol is a reasonable choice for tenderness along the jaw, provided it suits you. Anti-inflammatory painkillers are better left out unless the clinic has advised them, because they may add to bruising. Tenderness that eases day by day is expected. Pain that grows rather than fades, or comes with marked or one-sided swelling, is a reason to contact the clinic the same day.
Once the treated skin feels normal again, without warmth or tenderness. Until then, a gentle cleanser, a plain moisturiser and sunscreen are enough, and exfoliating acids and scrubs stay out too. If you are unsure whether your skin has settled, check your written aftercare or ask the clinic before restarting.
Facials, gua sha, microcurrent and home devices add pressure, friction or energy to the treated areas, so leave them for the first week, and skip facial massage for a few days. Long dental work with the mouth held wide open is better moved while the jaw is tender. Whether anything else can be done on the same areas is decided at your three-month visit.
While the jawline is tender, sleeping face-up with your head raised on an extra pillow keeps pressure off the treated areas. Lying on one side can make swelling look lopsided. If you turn in your sleep, pillows or a rolled towel either side of your head make it easier to stay on your back.
