HIFU Downtime —
Felt More Than Seen

Recovery from HIFU is mostly felt rather than seen: brief pinkness on the day, then tenderness along the jaw and cheeks. This page sets out what you are likely to notice, when you can be seen at work or in photographs, and what can draw recovery out. Dr Sin Yong plans each treatment around your face, so the timing below is a guide, not a promise.

Recovery Timeline

1. What You May Notice, Day By Day

No phase comes with a fixed duration: it depends on which areas were treated, at which depths, and on your own tissue, so treat the table as a typical pattern. How the plan is made is on the HIFU treatment page, and the appointment itself is in what to expect at a HIFU visit.

A typical recovery pattern after HIFU; timing varies between people and areas
WhenWhat you may noticeMost people can
Day 0Pinkness and warmth along the treated rows once the gel is wiped off, fading within hours. Tenderness when pressed, and a deep ache over bone that eases.Go back to work and ordinary activity the same day.
Days 1–3Tenderness over the jaw, cheeks or under the chin, most noticeable when chewing or smiling. Sometimes slight swelling along the jaw, a small bruise or tingling in one spot.Work and see people; the visible signs are usually slight.
Days 4–7Tenderness easing, though there is no fixed timetable. Skin may feel firmer: that is swelling and early contraction, not the result.Carry on as usual.
Week 2 onwardsUsually nothing visible. Temporary numbness or altered sensation, if it happened, usually settles over weeks.Resume the normal routine; keep up daily sun protection.
When results showThe collagen response builds over 8–12 weeks.Have the result judged at about three months, against your photographs.

Work And Social Plans

2. Being Seen At Work And With Friends

The visible phase is short, so HIFU often fits around a working day. Most people return to work straight afterwards, with little for colleagues to see.

What lingers is sensation. A tender jaw can make chewing uncomfortable for a few days, worth knowing before a business dinner. Make-up usually goes on once the pinkness has calmed, often by the next day; the HIFU aftercare guide covers how to look after the skin meanwhile.

Slower Recovery

3. What Can Draw Recovery Out

  • Heat and exertion. The jaw can feel more tender with heat or hard exercise, and saunas or very hot showers are better left until tenderness settles.
  • Pressure on the face. Facials and long dental work press on tender tissue; leave them until it has settled.
  • A bruise. Occasional, and it simply needs time to fade.
  • Something outside the usual pattern. A welt or blister line, marked or one-sided swelling, numbness that persists, a new hollow or a change in facial movement is not ordinary downtime. Contact the clinic the same day; HIFU complications explains each sign.

Events And Travel

4. Planning Around Weddings, Photographs And Flights

Photographs and events. Leave enough time for a small bruise to fade before a wedding, a shoot or a big occasion. If the event is the reason for treatment, raise it at consultation: the collagen response builds over 8–12 weeks, so the treatment date needs planning with that in mind.

Flights and travel. Travelling soon afterwards is usually fine. Pack sun protection, expect some tenderness, and keep the clinic's WhatsApp number, +65 8023 7170, to hand in case anything changes while you are away.

FAQ

HIFU Downtime — Common Questions

Ask a Question
Usually not for long. The pinkness along the treated rows tends to fade within hours, and there is no wound or dressing. Over the next few days some people have slight swelling along the jaw or an occasional small bruise, and make-up can usually go on once the skin has calmed. Most of what remains is tenderness, which you feel rather than show.
No. The early tightness comes from the immediate response of heated tissue and from mild swelling, and it fades as the swelling settles. The change that HIFU is meant to bring comes later, as new collagen forms over 8–12 weeks. That is why the result is judged at about three months, against the photographs taken before treatment, rather than in the first week.
Tenderness along the jawline can last a few days, and it is most noticeable when you chew, smile or press on the area. There is no fixed timetable, because it depends on the areas and depths treated and on your own tissue. Tenderness that eases is expected; tell the clinic about pain that worsens, or tenderness with obvious swelling, a raised welt or any change in how the face moves.
A small patch of tingling or altered sensation over the cheek or jaw can happen, and temporary numbness usually settles over weeks. Mention it at your follow-up, and message the clinic if it is not easing. Numbness that persists, spreads, or comes with weakness when you smile, purse your lips or raise your brow is not ordinary downtime and needs to be seen the same day.
