What Side Effects Can Thermage Cause? —
Expected, Uncommon, Urgent

Thermage side effects are usually brief: pinkness, warmth, mild swelling and tenderness that settle within hours to a day or two. Burns, blisters, dents and altered sensation are uncommon. Here is why each happens, how Dr Sin Yong lowers the risk at Atelier, and which signs need a same-day call.

Thermage Side Effects, In Brief

Most people leave with pink, warm, slightly swollen skin that fades the same day or the next, sometimes with a faint outline of the treatment tip. Uncommonly, a small burn or blister forms, or a dent appears where heat has reached the fat beneath thin skin.

Expected

What Most People Notice

Thermage FLX warms the dermis with monopolar radiofrequency while a cryogen spray cools the surface before, during and after each pulse. The warmth brings blood flow, so the skin looks pink and feels warm for a few hours, and mild swelling can follow, usually most visible along the jaw.

Tenderness is generally mild and fades without treatment. Brief tightness on the day is mostly swelling; the collagen change develops over two to six months. How the face tends to look day by day is set out on Thermage downtime.

Uncommon

Less Common Problems, And Their Causes

  • Small burn or blister. Can follow a pulse where cooling or contact was incomplete, or where the energy was too high for that patch of skin. In Asian skin a minor burn can heal with a temporary dark mark.
  • A dent or new hollow. Can appear when heat affects the fat under thin skin. It is more of a concern in a lean face, which is why such faces are treated more lightly.
  • Altered sensation. Numbness or tingling is uncommon and usually temporary, but persistent numbness should be seen.
  • Welts or a bruise. Less common; they settle over days.

A face that feels heavy weeks later is a different issue, often linked to earlier filler, and is assessed through pillow face correction.

If It Lingers

What To Do If Something Is Not Settling

Redness and swelling that improve each day can simply be watched. Send the clinic a photograph on WhatsApp if a mark has not faded after a few days, a blister appears or a dent seems to be forming. A burn is managed like a superficial burn, with wound care and strict sun avoidance, and is followed at the clinic until it has healed.

Anything getting worse, any open area, or a fever needs a same-day assessment wherever you are. Out of hours, for anything urgent, go to the nearest hospital emergency department. Day-to-day care is on Thermage aftercare, and complication care explains how problems are handled.

At Atelier

How Risk Is Kept Low At Atelier

Dr SY sets the energy area by area and adjusts it to what you report feeling during each pass. The tip must sit flat with good coupling so the cooling works, overlapping passes are avoided on thin tissue, and lean areas get lighter settings. Screening comes first, as described on Thermage suitability, and the treatment itself is on the Thermage page.

FAQ

Thermage Side Effects — Common Questions

Ask a Question
The usual ones are pinkness, warmth, mild swelling, tenderness and sometimes a faint outline of the tip, all of which tend to settle within hours to a day or two. Less often there are welts, a bruise or temporary numbness. Rarely, a small burn, blister or dent forms. Any blister or dent should be shown to the clinic early.
It can, though it is uncommon. A burn or blister usually traces back to a pulse where the cryogen cooling or the contact between tip and skin was incomplete, or where the energy was set too high for that area. If one forms, do not pick it; send the clinic a photograph so it can be seen the same day.
Skin colour matters less with radiofrequency than with many lasers, because the energy heats through electrical resistance rather than being absorbed by pigment. The main planning points are tissue thickness and the energy chosen for each area. The one difference is healing: if a small burn does occur, it is more likely to leave a temporary dark mark in Asian skin, so strict sun protection is advised until it has healed.
Yes. Dr SY can assess a blister, persistent redness, numbness or a dent after Thermage, wherever it was done. Bring the treatment date, the areas treated and, if you know it, the tip that was used, along with any photographs taken since. If there is an open area, worsening pain or a fever, seek same-day medical care rather than waiting for an appointment.
