Thermage Downtime —
Pink, Then Ordinary

Thermage FLX heats the dermis while the surface is cooled, so most people go back to work the same day, usually with little to cover. This page shows how your skin is likely to look, what can slow recovery and how to plan around events. At Atelier, Dr Sin Yong sets the energy zone by zone.

Recovery Timeline

1. What You May See, Day By Day

Cryogen cools the surface before, during and after each pulse, so the pinkness comes from blood flow in warmed skin rather than an injury, and most of it settles without help. What to do each day is on the Thermage aftercare page; the treatment is described on the Thermage page.

Work And Social

2. Back At Your Desk

Thermage FLX fits around a working day. The pinkness is short-lived and nothing is open, so there is no dressing to explain, and most people go straight back to the office.

Treated areas can feel tender to the touch for a while, and early firmness is mostly swelling; neither shows. Make-up can cover lingering pinkness once it has calmed, but not a raised welt, blister or crust: photograph those for the clinic instead.

Slower Recovery

3. What Can Slow Things Down

Heat is the usual cause: saunas, hot yoga and hot afternoons outdoors keep the pinkness lingering, and so can rubbing or massaging treated zones. What to skip, and for how long, is on the aftercare page.

A small welt or bruise settles over days. Tingling is usually temporary, but Dr SY will want to see you if it persists. A blister or burn mark is treated like a superficial burn, with wound care and sun avoidance, and followed until healed.

A forming dent suggests heat has reached the fat beneath the skin, a greater concern in a lean face. Heaviness that lingers long after swelling should have gone is usually a separate problem, particularly where filler was placed before; see pillow face correction. Tell the clinic beforehand about earlier filler, an implanted device or a lean face.

Events And Travel

4. Planning Around Events

For a wedding, a photo shoot or an important dinner, the visible after-effects are usually brief, since the pinkness passes quickly. If you bruise easily, leave time for a small bruise to fade before the date.

The firming is the slower part. Because it develops over two to six months, treat well ahead if you want the change in place for an event, and the degree of change varies with age, skin quality, laxity and sun exposure. Flying is not usually restricted: most people can fly the next day, once the skin feels comfortable.

FAQ

Thermage Downtime — Common Questions

Ask a Question
Usually not for long. Pinkness, warmth and slight swelling are the common signs, and they settle on their own. A faint grid left by the treatment tip can show briefly and fades with the pinkness. A small bruise is less common; if you bruise easily, allow time before a photographed event.
It is the outline of the treatment tip, left where each pulse was placed. A faint grid is expected and fades as the pinkness does. A grid of raised welts, blisters or crusts is different and not expected. If you see that, do not cover it with make-up: take a photograph and send it to the clinic on WhatsApp so Dr SY can decide whether you need to be seen.
That early firmness is mostly swelling, together with the immediate contraction of collagen as the dermis is heated, and the feeling fades over the following days. The lasting change comes later, as the skin lays down new collagen, and with Thermage FLX it develops over two to six months. It is judged at a follow-up visit, not in the first weeks.
It is uncommon. A dent or hollow suggests that heat has affected the fat beneath the skin, which is more likely where the face is lean. Dr SY sets the energy zone by zone, guided by your feedback on heat, to reduce that risk. If you notice a dip forming, often over the cheek or jawline, message the clinic early with a photograph rather than waiting to see whether it settles.
