Microneedling For Pores —
Firming The Rim, Not Closing It

Microneedling with radiofrequency improves pores by rebuilding the collagen around each opening, so a slackened pore casts a smaller shadow. At Atelier it is used mainly for oval cheek pores in skin that has lost support, usually alongside oil control. It does not shrink the opening, reduce the number of pores or stop oil, and Dr Sin Yong says so before you start.

The Mechanism

Why A Firmer Rim Looks Smaller

Book a Consultation

Every pore is a follicle mouth whose width you are born with. How large it looks depends on three things: how much oil fills it, whether a dark plug sits in it, and how well the collar of collagen around it holds the opening taut.

RF microneedling works on the collagen alone. Insulated needles enter the upper and mid dermis and release radiofrequency at their tips, heating the tissue around the follicles while the surface is largely spared. New collagen and elastin form over the following weeks, the rim firms, and the opening reads smaller. The wider plan is on pore reduction treatment.

Who It Suits

Which Pores Respond, And Which Do Not

Shape and site show which factor dominates.

Good Fit
Oval Cheek Pores
Pores stretched into ovals or teardrops as the collagen around them thins with age and sun. This includes oily and darker skin.
Good Fit
Pores In Rough Texture
Where pores sit among coarse texture or shallow scarring, the surrounding dermis is the target.
Partial Fit
Nose Pores
Driven by large oil glands. Gentle passes are possible, but oil control and clearing matter more.
Another Route First
Blocked Or Inflamed Pores
Congestion and active acne are treated first; needling congested skin can trigger a flare.

The Decision

RF Microneedling, CO2 Or A Clearing Treatment?

The dominant factor decides; plans often combine two.

  • Plugs and blackheads: clearing with a Hydrafacial or carbon laser peel, with a retinoid or salicylic acid at home once assessed.
  • A smooth surface over slack rims: RF microneedling, especially in skin that darkens easily.
  • Pores in etched, orange-peel texture: fractional CO2 may suit better, with a longer visible recovery. See CO2 laser for pores.
  • Pores that look large because tone is uneven: a pico laser plan for pigment.

Who should wait is on RF microneedling suitability.

RF Microneedling

On The Day

What Happens At A Pore Session

  1. Dr SY checks the skin again; a new breakout or cold sore in the area means the date moves.
  2. Numbing cream goes on for around half an hour, then is removed and the skin cleaned.
  3. Depths are set for each zone, shallower than for scars, with the cheeks mapped and the nose treated gently if at all.
  4. The handpiece rests flat, the needles enter, radiofrequency is released at their tips, and the needles withdraw, zone by zone.
  5. Pinpoint bleeding is blotted as he works. A bland moisturiser goes on and you receive written aftercare.

The visit takes forty to sixty minutes; see what to expect.

Recovery

Recovery And Aftercare

In the first days, swelling, redness and pinpoint marks can make pores look more obvious, not less. That is expected; the result is judged after the collagen has remodelled. Day-by-day timing is on RF microneedling downtime, and home care on RF microneedling aftercare.

Daily sunscreen protects the new collagen, and oil care continues after the course.

Safety

Risks And Side Effects

Expected: redness, mild swelling, pinpoint marks and small scabs that settle. Less common: redness that lasts longer, an acne flare in congested skin, and darkening after inflammation, which is the main concern in Asian skin. Rarely, a cold sore outbreak or infection.

Contact the clinic the same day if redness, pain or swelling gets worse instead of better, or the skin starts to weep.

FAQ

RF Microneedling For Pores — Common Questions

Ask a Question
Not literally. The opening, the number of pores and the size of the oil gland stay the same. What changes is the collagen around each opening: as it firms, a slackened oval pore holds a tighter shape and casts less shadow, so it looks smaller.
Early swelling, redness and tiny scabs around the needle points make the surface look busier, and pores can seem more noticeable for a few days. Collagen remodelling takes weeks, so pores are compared with your record photographs at a follow-up visit, under the same light, rather than in the mirror during the first week.
Not as its main effect. The heat may calm some congestion within an acne plan, but RF microneedling is chosen for the collagen around pores, not for oil. Oil is managed separately, with skincare such as a retinoid or salicylic acid once your skin has been assessed.
Possibly, with conservative settings and lower expectations. Nose pores sit over the largest oil glands, so oil and plugging usually drive how they look, and RF microneedling changes neither. Oil control and gentle clearing tend to help the nose more. RF microneedling earns its place on the cheeks, where pores slacken into ovals as the collagen around them thins.
Yes. Blocked pores refill whatever is done to the collagen around them, and needling through congested or inflamed skin can provoke a flare and, in skin that darkens easily, brown marks. Congestion and acne are treated first, and the collagen work follows once the skin is calm.
