RF Microneedling Aftercare —
Bland, Shaded, Left Alone

RF microneedling leaves the skin's surface intact but punctured across the treated area, so for a few days it needs bland care, no heat and strict shade. This page sets out what to do and when to message the clinic. The written aftercare Dr Sin Yong gives you comes first.

Day One

1. The First 24 Hours

Book a Consultation

Straight after treatment the skin looks and feels sunburnt: red, warm and tight. How that changes over the days is on the RF microneedling downtime page.

Do

  • Wash with lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser, then pat dry.
  • Apply the moisturiser you were given, and nothing else, that evening.
  • Stay out of direct sun: shade and a hat from day one.
  • Use a clean towel and a fresh pillowcase.

Avoid

  • Make-up for about 24 hours.
  • Heavy sweating, saunas and hot showers on the face.
  • Alcohol.
  • Retinoids, exfoliating acids, vitamin C, scrubs and masks.
  • Scrubbing or picking the treated skin.

The Flaking Days

2. The First Week

Around days three to five the skin often feels tight, dry and itchy, with fine flakes, as the surface renews.

  • Keep moisturising whenever the skin feels tight.
  • Let flakes lift by themselves: no scrubbing, picking or cleansing brushes.

Skin And Sun

3. Skincare And Sun Protection

Darkening after inflammation can follow any heat-based treatment, and it is more likely in medium and darker skin, which includes many Asian skin types. Insulated needles spare the surface but do not remove that risk, so sun protection comes first.

  • From day one: shade, a hat and no direct sun.
  • Once the surface has settled, as you are advised: broad-spectrum sunscreen each morning, reapplied outdoors.
  • Keep it up for weeks, with extra shade through the first fortnight.

Retinoids and exfoliating acids can usually return at about five to seven days, once the skin feels comfortable, unless your written aftercare says later. Darkening is shown to Dr SY, not treated at home with strong brightening creams; see post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Everyday Life

4. Exercise, Make-Up And Flights

Exercise. Light everyday activity is fine. Exercise, heat and heavy sweating wait for at least the first 48 hours, because sweat and heat irritate fresh skin and keep it red for longer.

Sauna and pool. Saunas and steam rooms wait until the skin has settled; swimming waits until the flaking has passed.

Make-up. Usually fine after about 24 hours, once the channels have closed; the skin is more sensitive at first, so mineral make-up suits these days.

Flights. About two to four days between session and flight is the usual plan; somewhere sunny needs a shade plan too.

Safety

5. When To Contact The Clinic

Redness, warmth, mild swelling, flaking and some itching are expected. Message the clinic the same day for any of these:

  • Redness spreading instead of fading, or pain increasing after day two.
  • Marked swelling, or swelling on one side only.
  • A blister, an open or weeping area, any crusting (above all thick or yellow crusts), pus or pustules.
  • A cluster of small painful sores or blisters, which can be a cold sore.
  • Fever.
  • Later: darkening, a firm or raised area, a line of marks that is not fading, or one patch staying red far longer than the rest.

WhatsApp +65 8023 7170 (Monday to Saturday, 11:00–20:00) and say if it is urgent. Worsening symptoms, a blister, an open area or a fever need a doctor the same day, wherever you are: if the clinic is closed or cannot see you, go to the nearest hospital emergency department. More: complication care.

FAQ

RF Microneedling Aftercare — Common Questions

Ask a Question
No. Dry, rough or faintly bronzed skin with fine flakes is the surface renewing once the needle channels have closed, and it is expected in the first week. Scrubs, acids and brushes only irritate it and keep it red for longer. Keep moisturising, let the flakes lift and stay shaded. Message the clinic if crusting, pustules or spreading redness appear.
Mostly not: aftercare follows the RF microneedling, which opened the channels the preparation went into. One thing changes: retinoids, acids and scrubs stay paused until your follow-up visit instead of returning at five to seven days. Otherwise: hands off, no make-up or heat until the skin settles, and only the products you were given. Contact the clinic the same day for worsening redness, swelling or itch, pus, honey-coloured crusts, fever, increasing pain, a rash or hives.
Message the clinic, and do not treat it yourself with strong brightening creams. Darkening after RF microneedling is usually post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, more likely in darker skin and after sun. It is watched rather than treated over, and with strict sun protection it usually fades, though that can take months. Dr SY checks it before the next session is planned.
Not on the treated area while it heals: facials, other lasers and home devices stay off it through the flaking days. The next session is planned at your follow-up visit, and sessions are usually four to six weeks apart because the collagen response needs that time. Shortening the gap does not speed the result. Ask at that visit about anything else you have in mind.
