Is RF Microneedling Right For My Skin? —
Suits, Waits, Or Another Step First

Microneedling with radiofrequency helps a particular group of skin problems: the ones that live in the dermis and improve when collagen is rebuilt. This page covers who RF microneedling at Atelier suits, who should wait, and who needs another treatment before it. Dr Sin Yong decides at an examination, not from a photograph.

RF microneedling tends to suit rolling and shallow boxcar acne scars, rough texture, cheek pores that have lost their collagen support, and early softening of the skin along the jaw and lower face. It suits less well, or needs another step before it, when scars are tied down, ice-pick tracts are deep, the face has descended, or the skin is inflamed.

The Layer

What RF Microneedling Can And Cannot Reach

At Atelier, insulated needles pass through the surface and release bipolar radiofrequency at their tips, so the heat lands in the dermis while the skin above is largely spared. Fibroblasts then lay down new collagen and elastin over the following eight to twelve weeks.

It does not lift dropped tissue, replace lost fat, close a pore, stop oil or clear brown pigment. More on the RF microneedling page.

Timing

Who Should Wait, And Who Needs Another Step First

Usually postponed

  • Inflamed acne, infection or a cold sore in the area to be treated.
  • Pregnancy.
  • Oral isotretinoin taken recently; timing is discussed in isotretinoin and laser timing.
  • Blood-thinning medicines that have not yet been discussed. Never stop a prescribed medicine on your own.
  • A fresh tan.

A different plan, or extra caution

  • A pacemaker or other implanted electronic device.
  • Metal implants or gold threads in the area.
  • A tendency to keloid scarring.
  • Melasma, which reacts to heat as well as light.

Skin Type

Darker Skin Is Not A Bar

Radiofrequency is not absorbed by melanin, and insulated needles keep most of the heat away from the pigment-bearing surface. That is why RF microneedling is workable in Fitzpatrick III to V skin. It still carries a risk of darkening after inflammation, so settings stay conservative and sun protection is strict around every session. RF microneedling in Asian skin covers this in depth.

At Atelier

How Suitability Is Assessed At Atelier

Dr SY examines the skin under angled light and stretches it across each scar: a scar that flattens is a dermal deficit RF microneedling can remodel, while one that stays fixed is tethered and is released before any heat is used. Pores are checked for oil, plugging and a slackened rim, because RF microneedling changes only the last. Laxity is told apart from descent, and your medicines, implants and healing history are checked.

Photographs are taken with your consent for your medical record only. Your written plan states what it should change, what it will not, and the option of no treatment. Scar planning is on RF microneedling for acne scars, and quotes on how we quote.

FAQ

RF Microneedling Suitability — Common Questions

Ask a Question
Only an examination can say. You are likely to suit it if your concern is rolling or shallow boxcar scarring, rough texture, slackened cheek pores or early loss of firmness, your skin is calm, and you can protect it from the sun for several weeks. If your scars are tethered, your pores are mainly oily, or your jawline has dropped, another treatment usually leads and RF microneedling may follow.
Often, but with caution and a changed order. Melasma can flare with heat even though radiofrequency is not absorbed by melanin, so the pigment is usually settled and managed separately before scar work begins. Treatment then uses insulated needles, conservative energy and strict sun protection. Whether and when to start is decided case by case at consultation, and active melasma generally takes priority.
It can be, for crepey neck texture, early neck laxity and white stretch marks. Neck skin is thinner than facial skin, so settings are gentler there. Red stretch marks usually need a vascular laser for their colour, which microneedling does not address. Neck bands and hanging skin are different problems.
Radiofrequency passes current through tissue, so metal implants or gold threads in the treatment area call for caution or a different approach, and a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device changes the plan too. Dr SY checks where the implant sits and decides whether to treat around it, choose another method, or not treat.
