Facial Laser Hair Removal Singapore —
Asking Why The Hair Is There

Laser hair removal in Singapore for the face treats dark, coarse hair across the upper lip, chin, jawline, sideburns and front of the neck, using the clinic's long-pulsed 755 nm alexandrite and 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser. Facial skin reacts more readily than the body, and new facial hair can have a hormonal cause, so Dr Sin Yong checks both first.

The Mechanism

Pigment In The Hair, Not The Skin

Book a Consultation

Melanin in the hair shaft absorbs the laser's light and carries the heat to the follicle. Only growing follicles respond, so a course is spread over several sessions, as the main laser hair removal page explains.

The face differs in two ways. Its skin is thinner, sees more sun and often carries retinoids or acids, which raises the chance of pigment change in Fitzpatrick III to V skin. And in women, facial hair sometimes has a medical cause a laser cannot reach.

Who It Suits

Which Facial Hair Responds

Coarse, dark hair responds most readily. The brows and anything inside the bony rim of the eye socket are not treated.

Fine, pale down holds too little pigment to heat reliably (see the questions below). The wavelength follows skin tone: 755 nm alexandrite for lighter skin with dark hair, and 1064 nm Nd:YAG for Fitzpatrick IV to VI skin, or a face that is tanned or deeper in colour than the body. Its trade-offs are set out on laser hair removal for darker skin and the alexandrite laser page.

The Decision

When Facial Hair Needs A Medical Look First

In women, coarse hair on the chin, jawline or upper lip can be hirsutism, most often driven by polycystic ovary syndrome; thyroid or adrenal conditions, some medicines and, rarely, hormone-producing growths are less common causes.

At Atelier, hair that is new, spreading quickly or coarsening, particularly alongside irregular periods or adult acne, prompts blood tests and a gynaecology or endocrine opinion first. Laser then runs alongside that care, because it reduces hair without treating the cause. Hair that has been stable since the teenage years, with a family pattern, is usually treated without tests. See also hormonal acne in adult women.

When to wait. A tan, sunburn or self-tan; an active cold sore, acne flare, eczema or broken skin; pregnancy; and recent isotretinoin or any medicine that makes skin light-sensitive, until discussed. Moles that are dark or changing are checked and avoided.

Laser Hair Removal

On The Day

What Happens At Your Session

  1. Shave beforehand; do not wax, thread or pluck.
  2. Mention cold sores if the upper lip is being treated.
  3. Dr SY agrees the zones with you, including the sideburn edge and neck line.
  4. For Fitzpatrick IV and above, a tan, earlier pigment change after laser or IPL, or active skincare, a test patch on the jawline or in front of the ear comes first.
  5. Eyewear goes on, and the laser is passed zone by zone with surface cooling.
  6. The skin is checked before you leave.

Recovery

After The Session

Pink skin, follicle bumps and warmth usually settle within hours to a day, and treated hairs then shed and can look like regrowth. Laser hair removal downtime gives the timeline, and the aftercare guide covers cooling, shaving and sun. On the face, keep retinoids and acids off the area while it is pink, and wear sunscreen and a hat every day.

Risks

Risks And Side Effects

Less common: blistering, crusting, or a darker or paler patch, more likely on tanned or darker skin. Rare: paradoxical hypertrichosis, reported mostly on the face and neck in darker skin, and a cold sore flare. Send the clinic a photograph of any blister, crust, or grey or white patch; darker patches are explained on post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

FAQ

Facial Laser Hair Removal — Common Questions

Ask a Question
Usually, if the hair is dark enough. Tell the clinic about cold sores before your first session, because heat on the lip can set off a flare; whether antiviral cover is needed is decided at consultation. An active cold sore means that area waits until it has healed.
Not reliably. Fine, pale facial hair carries too little pigment to absorb enough energy, so results are poor, and treating it has been linked to paradoxical hypertrichosis, in which hair near the treated area grows thicker. Dr SY will say so plainly if your hair is too fine to respond.
Often because something is still driving it. Chin and jawline hair in women responds to androgens, and while that drive continues, new follicles can be recruited after a course, which is not the same as the laser failing. New or quickly coarsening hair, particularly with irregular periods or adult acne, deserves a hormonal assessment.
No. Shaving cuts the hair at the surface and does not change the follicle, so it cannot make hair coarser or darker. It is required before a session, because the laser reaches the follicle through the hair shaft left in place.
Yes, using the 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength, which is absorbed less by melanin in the outer skin, together with cooling and a test patch first. A fresh tan is a reason to wait, because extra surface pigment absorbs energy meant for the hair and raises the risk of burns and dark or pale patches.
