Laser Hair Removal Aftercare —
Cool, Shaved And Shaded

The laser heats pigment in growing hair, so the skin around each follicle reacts briefly, then settles. Aftercare means keeping that skin cool and undisturbed, shaving rather than waxing or plucking between sessions, and keeping sun and tanning away. Dr Sin Yong sets the clinic's long-pulsed 755 nm alexandrite and 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser for your skin tone and hair colour.

Day One

1. The First 24 Hours

Book a Consultation

Pink skin with small raised bumps around each follicle, rather like goosebumps, is the expected reaction. It may feel warm or sting a little, and usually settles within hours to a day. How a course is planned is on the laser hair removal page.

Do

  • Hold a clean, cool compress on the area while it feels warm.
  • Wear loose clothing over the treated skin.
  • Keep the area clean and use a fragrance-free moisturiser.
  • Follow the written aftercare you are given; it takes priority over this page.

Avoid

  • Hot showers, saunas, steam rooms and strenuous exercise for 24 to 48 hours.
  • Perfumed products and deodorant on the treated skin.
  • Rubbing or scratching the bumps.
  • Sun on the treated area.

The Following Days

2. The First Week

Shedding. Over one to three weeks the treated hairs loosen and work their way out, which can pass for new growth; the downtime page shows when. Ordinary washing lifts them, and gentle exfoliation can help once the skin feels normal. Small scabs are covered in the questions below.

Hair removal. Shaving is fine once the redness and bumps have settled, usually after a day or two. Waxing, plucking, threading and epilating are not used between sessions, because the laser needs the root in place; nor is bleaching.

Skin And Sun

3. Skincare And Sun Protection

Until the skin feels normal again, keep perfumed products and exfoliants off it.

From then on, put a broad-spectrum sunscreen on any treated area the sun can reach, for the whole course. Avoid tanning before and between sessions, and do not arrive with self-tan on.

A tan puts more pigment in the skin's surface, where it competes with the hair for the laser's energy, so burns, blisters and darker or lighter patches become more likely. After significant sun exposure, Dr SY may defer the next session.

Everyday Life

4. Exercise, Swimming And Make-Up

Exercise and heat. Sweaty workouts, hot showers and saunas wait until the warmth has gone, usually a day or two.

Swimming. Pools and the sea wait until the skin feels normal and no scab remains: chlorine and salt sting treated skin.

Make-up. On the face, wait until the skin has cooled and there is no scab or blister.

Between sessions. Do not use a home laser or light device on the same area.

Safety

5. When To Contact The Clinic

Follicle-shaped redness and bumps that fade are expected. These signs are not, and need to be seen:

  • Blisters, including a cluster of small ones, or a patch that looks burnt.
  • Redness that spreads or worsens instead of fading.
  • Thick, yellow or oozing scabs, or any pus.
  • Increasing pain, or a fever.
  • A dark or pale patch where the laser passed, or darkening spreading beyond the follicles.
  • A bump that does not settle, or an ingrown hair that becomes infected.

For any of these, photograph the area and WhatsApp the clinic on +65 8023 7170 (Monday to Saturday, 11:00–20:00). If anything is getting worse, or there is a blister, open skin or a fever, you need to be seen the same day, wherever you are; out of hours, go to the nearest hospital emergency department rather than waiting for a reply. See complication care and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

FAQ

Laser Hair Removal Aftercare — Common Questions

Ask a Question
Usually after about a day, once the redness and bumps have settled. Until then, keep deodorant and perfumed products off the area; when you restart, a gentle, fragrance-free deodorant is kinder at first. If the skin under your arm blisters, oozes or is getting worse, leave product off it, send the clinic a photograph and arrange to be seen the same day.
No. Those hairs are already on their way out, and pulling them gains nothing. Tweezing, waxing, threading and epilating all remove the root, and the next session needs that root in place, because the laser reaches the follicle through the pigment in the hair. If the area looks untidy while the hairs shed, shave it.
Leave it to come away by itself. Small scabs can form where hair was dense and dark and more energy was absorbed, although they are not the usual course. Keep the area moisturised and shaded, stay out of pools and the sea until it has gone, and do not pick, as that makes a mark more likely. Send the clinic a photograph so the settings can be adjusted; a thick, yellow or oozing scab is one of the warning signs above.
Mention any new medicine you have started, and any sun, tanning or self-tan since your last visit, because tanned skin absorbs more of the laser's energy. Say, too, if a scab or a pale spot followed an earlier session, even if it has since healed, because it may change the settings Dr SY chooses.
