Laser Hair Removal Downtime —
Pink For A Day, Then Shedding

A session usually leaves the skin pink and bumpy for hours to a day, and the treated hairs then shed over the following one to three weeks. This page sets out what you may see and when, so that you and Dr Sin Yong can plan a course around work, holidays and events.

Recovery Timeline

How the skin reacts depends on your skin tone, the colour and density of the hair, and the area. The clinic's long-pulsed 755 nm alexandrite and 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser is set for each: 755 nm generally for lighter skin, 1064 nm for darker. The timings below are typical, not fixed.

How treated skin usually looks after a laser hair removal session
WhenWhat you may noticeMost people can
Day 0Pink skin with raised bumps around each follicle, warmth like mild sunburn and slight stinging; sometimes mild swelling of the upper lip or bikini line. A singed smell and frizzed hairs are ordinary.Return to work the same day.
Days 1–3Bumps have usually flattened and redness faded within hours to a day; the upper lip is slower than the body. Small scabs over dense, dark hair are not the usual course: send a photograph.Shave once the skin has settled; exercise once the warmth has gone, usually after a day or two.
Days 4–7Skin generally looks ordinary. Treated hairs loosen and push out over one to three weeks, which can look like regrowth.Swim once the skin is back to normal and any scab has gone.
Week 2 onwardsShedding ends by about three weeks. Hair that grows after that was resting at the last session.Book the next session, usually 4–6 weeks after the last.
When results showFewer, finer hairs across a course of 6–8 sessions: a long-term reduction, not the loss of every hair. White or grey hairs do not respond; occasional maintenance may be advised.Varies; judged at each follow-up visit.

Work And Plans

2. Work And Social Plans

Nothing is cut or opened, and the redness settles by itself, so a session usually fits around a working day. On the face, the upper lip can stay pink a little longer than the body.

In the shedding weeks the area can look untidy; a razor tidies it. Make-up timing and day-to-day care are on the laser hair removal aftercare page.

Slower Recovery

3. What Can Lengthen Recovery

Recovery takes longer when pigment in the skin, rather than the hair, absorbs the heat, which can leave scabs, blisters, a dark patch or a pale spot.

  • A tan. Sun, or self-tan left on the skin, gives the laser more surface pigment to heat; after significant sun exposure, a session is deferred.
  • Darker skin and very dense, dark hair. Both mean more energy is absorbed in the treated skin; darker or reactive skin has a test patch first.
  • Settings that do not match the skin. The wrong wavelength or fluence can heat the surface.
  • Picking and friction. Lifting scabs makes marks more likely; tight clothing rubs.

Dark and pale patches are covered below and under post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation; same-day signs are on the aftercare page and in complication care.

Events

4. Planning Around Events

The shedding weeks shape the timing most: an area can look untidy for one to three weeks after a session, so leave room before a wedding, a holiday or photographs. Flying is not usually restricted.

Give Dr SY your fixed dates when the course is planned; sessions are spaced 4–6 weeks apart, following the hair cycle. Beach trips are covered in the questions below.

FAQ

Laser Hair Removal Downtime — Common Questions

Ask a Question
Those raised dots are perifollicular oedema: a little swelling around each follicle as the heated hair inside it reacts. The follicle-by-follicle pattern is expected and usually fades within hours to a day. A stripe, a blotch or a mark the shape of the handpiece tip where there was no hair is different; it is checked before you leave, and if one appears later, send the clinic a photograph.
Usually this is shedding, not regrowth: for one to three weeks, treated hairs work loose and surface, which can look like new growth. Hair that appears after that was resting during the session and is reached as it enters its growth phase, which is why a course runs to 6–8 sessions and is judged as a whole.
It means some of the energy was taken up by pigment in the skin rather than the hair. A dark patch is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation; it usually fades slowly, over months rather than weeks, helped by sun protection and leaving it alone. A pale spot is hypopigmentation and can take longer. Either way, send the clinic a photograph rather than waiting for your next session.
Away from both ends of the trip. Sun on freshly treated skin is avoided, so a session just before you leave is a poor fit, and a tan when you return gives the laser more surface pigment to heat, raising the risk of burns and pigment change; the next session may then be deferred.
