Beard And Neck · Line Agreed First · Pacific Plaza
Beard laser hair removal in Singapore is most often asked for because of razor bumps on the neck. It comes as two plans: shaping the neck and edges while keeping the beard, or reducing the whole beard. At Atelier, Dr Sin Yong agrees the line before any pulse, because reduced hair does not grow back as it was.
Beard hair is the coarsest, densest hair most men have, and androgens drive it throughout adult life. Its pigment gives the laser a strong target, as the laser hair removal page explains, but dense dark hair also passes heat to the skin around it, so first settings are gentle even on fair skin. Only growing follicles respond, so the beard thins in stages.
At A Glance
Your plan follows an agreed line.
The Decision
Shaping treats only what lies outside the beard you keep: the neck below the jaw, the cheek line, the edges. It is the more common request. Removal covers the full beard, upper lip and neck included, and is a decision to live with.
Agreed beforehand: the plan, the neck line, whether the cheek line stays natural or is straightened or lowered, whether lip and chin are included, and any scar or mole to avoid. The line is kept on a diagram for every visit.
Razor Bumps
Most men ask because of pseudofolliculitis barbae: coarse, often curved hair, cut below the surface, grows back into the skin, which reacts as it would to a splinter with a tender bump. On darker skin a brown mark can outlast it. Shaving less closely, with the grain, or growing the beard out helps.
Laser reduces the hair itself; long-pulsed 1064 nm has been studied in Fitzpatrick IV to VI skin, with fewer bumps reported. Inflamed bumps settle first; persistent ones are examined, since folliculitis and acne look similar.
Skin And Hair
A neck test patch is routine for Fitzpatrick IV and above and for tanned faces. Wait with inflamed bumps or broken skin, a cold sore if the lip or chin is planned, a recent tan, and recent isotretinoin or a sun-sensitising medicine until discussed. Dark or changing moles are checked and avoided. Mention testosterone or finasteride use.
| Skin and hair | Usual wavelength | What needs care |
|---|---|---|
| Fitzpatrick I to II | 755 nm | Dense hair holds heat; gentle first settings |
| Fitzpatrick III | 755 nm set low, or 1064 nm if tanned | Outdoor tans often go unnoticed |
| Fitzpatrick IV, often curved hair | 1064 nm | Pigment change is the main risk |
| Fitzpatrick V to VI | 1064 nm | Test patch, gentlest settings, close follow-up |
| Salt-and-pepper beard | Dark hairs respond; grey ones do not | The beard thins unevenly |
On The Day
Recovery
Redness and bumps settle by themselves. Skip shaving that day, then shave gently with the grain once settled. While the skin is warm, avoid saunas, the gym and tight collars, keep aftershave off until calm, and wear sunscreen daily. See laser hair removal aftercare.
Hair that appears and falls out soon after is treated hair leaving. Finer, sparser regrowth is expected, and coarse regrowth along an edge may mean the boundary should move; see how many laser hair removal sessions.
Risks
Redness and bumps are common; blistering and colour change are less common, more so on darker or tanned skin; see post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Uncommon: paradoxical hypertrichosis, coarser new hair just beyond the treated zone, mostly on the neck and cheeks in darker skin. Rare: a cold sore flare. Send a photograph of any blister, spreading redness, pus-filled bump or colour change.
