Acne Treatment Singapore: Scar Questions —
Five Themes, Explained

People researching acne treatment in Singapore tend to ask the same five things about scars once the breakouts have settled. This article takes each theme in turn and answers it the way Dr Sin Yong would at a consultation; for quick, one-paragraph answers, see the acne scar FAQ.

Theme One

Several Laser Sessions, Little Change

Book a Consultation

The most common story is a run of laser sessions that softened the skin's texture but left the dents in place. The usual explanation is that some of the scars were never a surface problem. A rolling scar is ordinary skin pulled down by a fibrous band beneath it, and no amount of resurfacing reaches that band. An ice-pick scar is a narrow tract deeper than a laser column can follow.

The fix is to go back to the map rather than add more sessions. Each scar is examined under side light and with the skin stretched: dips that flatten on stretch are tethered and need subcision; narrow pits need TCA CROSS; only then does resurfacing finish the job. The types are explained on acne scar types.

Theme Two

Is Fractional CO2 Too Risky For Darker Skin?

Darkening after treatment is more likely in Fitzpatrick III to V skin, and that risk can be managed but not removed. The measures are conservative settings, point treatment of pits rather than heavy coverage, waiting until any tan has faded, care of the healing surface, strict sun protection and a planned follow-up.

For some people, RF microneedling or a staged plan of lighter steps suits better. Atelier's resurfacing for acne scars is the Tetra Pro Scar³ protocol, and the specific question of CO2 in Asian skin has its own page: is CO2 laser safe for Asian skin?

Theme Three

Home Rollers And Acids Bought Online

Home dermarollers do not reach the depth where tethering and dermal loss sit, and repeated use on skin that is not sterile risks infection and darkening. Strong trichloroacetic acid sold online is a more serious problem: applied at home it can burn, scar and leave pigment change, and there is no safe home version of TCA CROSS, which depends on placing a tiny amount inside each tract with a fine applicator.

What does help at home is less dramatic: keeping acne controlled, daily sunscreen, not picking, and, where your skin tolerates it, a topical retinoid for surface texture. None of these lifts a depressed scar.

Theme Four

Will Treated Scars Come Back?

Scars that have been remodelled do not reappear by themselves. Three things can still change the picture. New acne makes new scars, so control continues after the scar work ends. Some deep, long-standing bands partly re-tether after subcision, which is one reason a course of release is planned rather than a single session. And as the face loses volume with age, the shadow over an old scar can deepen, which sometimes calls for a different step years later.

Collagen changes build over months, so results are judged against record photographs rather than the mirror. No one can promise how long an improvement lasts.

Theme Five

Fees, And Treatment In Singapore Or Abroad

Clinics in Singapore do not advertise fees; the rules on medical advertising restrict it. The fee for scar work also cannot be known before the scars are mapped: it depends on how many zones are treated, how many scars are tethered, which methods and materials are used, and how the plan is staged. At Atelier a written, itemised quote follows assessment, as how we quote explains.

Comparing Singapore with JB or Korea, the useful question is whether the scars are mapped first and whether the same doctor sees you between stages, because staged work depends on follow-up and any complication should ideally be seen by the doctor who treated you. See aesthetic treatment in JB and Singapore and how Korea treats acne scars.

Acne Treatment Singapore: Where The Answers Lead

Most faces carry more than one scar type, so the realistic goal is clear improvement in each type, not complete removal. At Atelier the plan runs in an order: acne controlled first, scars mapped, tethers released and pits treated, then resurfacing, with polynucleotide support where it helps. The overview is on acne scar treatment.

FAQ

Acne Scar Questions — Common Questions

Ask a Question
Bring photographs of your skin when the acne was active, if you have them, and records of earlier treatments, with dates and settings where possible. List every medicine and supplement, including any isotretinoin and blood thinners, and mention any history of keloids or cold sores. Come without make-up over the scarred areas, so Dr SY can map them in side light.
Usually a little. Retinoids, exfoliating acids and scrubs may be paused before a procedure, on the timing you are given. Sunscreen continues every day and starts before your first session, because any tan has to fade before treatment. If a doctor prescribed your retinoid or acne medicine, check with them before stopping it.
Usually not. Swelling, a bronzed rough surface and crusting are part of healing after fractional CO2, and the skin then stays pink for some weeks. The result is judged at your follow-up, not in the first fortnight. Thick yellow crusts, blisters, increasing pain or spreading redness are different and need a call to the clinic the same day.
Yes. A consultation maps your scars, explains which methods would reach each type, and sets out the options, including no treatment at all. A written quote follows, and nothing is booked unless you decide to go ahead. Many people use the assessment to plan around exams, work or travel before starting.
