Staged Scar Work · Korea And Singapore · Pacific Plaza
If you are comparing acne scar treatment Singapore clinics offer with what you have read about Korea, the toolkit turns out to be largely shared. This article explains how Korean practice stages scar work, where polynucleotide injections fit, and what Dr Sin Yong changes at Atelier for year-round equatorial sun and a wider range of skin types.
What sets the Korean approach apart is less a particular device than a habit of order. Scars are sorted into ice-pick, boxcar and rolling before anything is booked, and each type is given the tool that can physically reach it. The scar types themselves are set out on acne scar types.
Two layers run side by side. The procedural layer deals with structure: subcision cuts the fibrous bands under rolling scars with a needle or cannula, and TCA CROSS puts a strong trichloroacetic acid into the floor of each ice-pick pit. The device layer handles surface and dermis: fractional CO2 or erbium lasers, non-ablative fractional lasers and RF microneedling. Injectables come in where tissue has thinned.
Some of this toolkit has Korean roots. The CROSS technique was first described by doctors in Korea in 2002, and low-fluence Q-switched Nd:YAG toning for acne-related pigment was developed and widely used there. Both are now standard in Singapore as well.
PN And PDRN
Korean clinics use DNA-fragment injectables widely. Both PDRN and PN are purified preparations, usually from salmon: PDRN has shorter fragments and a history in wound healing, while PN has longer, thicker chains and is the basis of products such as Rejuran.
The evidence for scars is encouraging but thin. A small randomised study in 2021 compared purified polynucleotide with placebo in moderate to severe acne scars. At Atelier, Rejuran S is used as an adjunct after release or resurfacing, because it supports remodelling without cutting a tether or lifting a pit floor. As Dr SY puts it, resurfacing a scar that is tethered from below treats the wrong structure. The wider role of these injectables is covered in the polynucleotide skin booster guide.
Local Conditions
Sun. Korea has a low-UV winter that suits ablative resurfacing, and many clinics schedule it then. Singapore sits near the equator with strong UV all year, so there is no quiet season: sun protection is continuous, ablative stages are paced, and heat is treated as a pigment trigger in its own right.
Skin type. Korean patients are mostly Fitzpatrick III to IV. Patients in Singapore range from III to V, so CO2 density, TCA strength and RF settings are set more conservatively, and insulated needles are chosen more often.
Rules. In Singapore, devices and injectables must be registered with the Health Sciences Authority, and the Singapore Medical Council sets standards for consent, for who performs procedures and for advertising. Fees are not advertised; a written quote follows assessment, as how we quote explains.
| Step | Typical Korean practice | At Atelier |
|---|---|---|
| Sorting scars | Ice-pick, boxcar and rolling scars typed before treatment | The same, plus a stretch test under side light to find tethering |
| Rolling scars | Subcision, often ahead of laser | Subcision first; injectable volume in the released plane where tissue is lost, as in 4D Scar Reconstruction |
| Ice-pick scars | TCA CROSS | TCA CROSS, kept cautious for Fitzpatrick IV–V skin |
| Resurfacing | Fractional CO2 or erbium, often in winter | Tetra Pro Scar³ on the DEKA Tetra Pro: point shots into pits, then fractional passes, paced around year-round sun |
| RF microneedling | Widely used | Insulated needles in darker skin, with depth set zone by zone |
| Polynucleotides | Often given with laser sessions | Rejuran S as an adjunct after structural steps |
| Flat brown marks | Low-fluence toning, sometimes for many months | Toning with a stated purpose and an agreed stopping point |
At Atelier
Atelier keeps the order: acne controlled, scars typed and stretch-tested, subcision before resurfacing, TCA CROSS for ice-pick tracts, multi-depth CO2 through the Tetra Pro Scar³ protocol, and Rejuran S as support. For mixed, severe scarring these steps are combined as 4D Scar Reconstruction.
Some habits are left out on purpose:
Punch techniques and formal scar revision are assessed at Atelier; surgery is arranged by referral where needed.
Dr Sin Yong holds a Key Opinion Leader appointment with DEKA.
Travel
Scar work is staged over months, with healing time and a follow-up visit between steps. Treatment abroad can be planned well, but repeated flights make follow-up and complication care harder, and returning to equatorial sun soon after CO2 resurfacing raises the chance of darkening.
If you are treated overseas, keep a record of each method, device, setting, product and date. That record lets a doctor in Singapore continue the plan safely rather than starting again.
