Is Pico Laser Suitable for My Skin? —
Which Mode, Or When To Wait

Pico laser suits pigment that can be broken up, such as sun spots, freckles, settled acne marks and tattoo ink, and the right approach depends on which of these you have. This page sets out who suits spot, toning or fractional pico laser treatment at Atelier, who should wait, and why darker skin changes the settings rather than the answer. Dr Sin Yong makes the decision after examining your skin.

If your concern is discrete brown pigment, ink or fine texture, pico laser is likely to fit, in one of three modes. If it is melasma, it fits only as a cautious add-on. If it is loose skin, redness from blood vessels or active acne, pico laser is the wrong tool.

Which Pico Laser Approach Suits Which Concern

Pico laser at Atelier is delivered in three ways: spot treatment aimed at a single mark, low-energy toning across an area, and fractional delivery for texture. Wavelength decides which pigment absorbs the light and how deep it goes.

Who Should Wait

Reasons To Wait Before Pico Laser

  • A melasma flare: heat can darken skin that is already overactive.
  • A recent tan or sunburn.
  • Recent oral isotretinoin; the gap is judged for each person (see isotretinoin and laser timing).
  • Active infection or inflammation in the area, or photosensitising medicines.
  • Pregnancy.
  • A tendency to keloid scars, weighed case by case.
  • A pigmented spot that is changing, bleeding or unusual, which is examined first and referred for dermatological assessment if needed.

Fitzpatrick III to V skin is not on this list. It changes the settings, not the answer; see pico laser for darker skin.

How This Is Assessed At Atelier

Dr SY names the pigment first, then chooses the wavelength, the mode, the energy and the spacing between visits. Toning the same area too often can leave mottled pale spots, so every course has a stopping point. Atelier's pico laser is the DEKA TORO, used for the T2 Frax Radiance protocol; how platforms differ is covered in PicoSure vs pico lasers. Your written plan, and what changes the quote, follow the examination (how we quote).

Dr Sin Yong holds a Key Opinion Leader appointment with DEKA.

FAQ

Pico Laser Suitability — Common Questions

Ask a Question
You probably are if your concern is well-defined brown pigment such as sun spots or freckles, brown marks that remain after acne has settled, fine surface texture or a tattoo, and your skin is not freshly tanned or inflamed. Melasma makes you a cautious candidate. Loose skin, redness or active acne point to other treatments. The answer is confirmed only once Dr SY has examined your skin.
Book the consultation, but expect the laser itself to wait until the tan has faded. Tanned skin holds more melanin at the surface, absorbs more of the energy and is more likely to darken afterwards. In the meantime, daily broad-spectrum sunscreen, shade and a hat help the skin settle faster.
Much less than the settings do. Picosecond platforms differ mainly in their wavelengths and optics; all of them break up pigment mainly through a pressure effect. In darker skin especially, the wavelength, energy, spot size and spacing chosen for your pigment matter more than the name on the machine.
Usually, yes. Freckles are pigment deposits near the surface and are among the clearest matches for pico spot treatment. They do return with sun exposure, so daily sun protection has to continue afterwards. A mark that looks different from your other freckles is examined before any laser is used.
