CO2 Laser Downtime —
Plan For The Visible Week

Fractional CO2 resurfacing has a healing phase you can see: the skin seeps, bronzes, crusts and peels before pink new skin shows through. How long that takes depends on the depth and density Dr Sin Yong sets for your scars, so this page gives the usual pattern and the points to plan around.

Recovery Timeline

1. From Day One To Fading Pink

Each pulse vaporises a narrow column of skin, and repair starts from the untouched skin around it. How fast each stage passes depends on the settings used, so the table shows a usual pattern. At Atelier the laser is the DEKA Tetra Pro, one of the clinic's DEKA platforms; Dr Sin Yong holds a Key Opinion Leader appointment with DEKA.

How fractional CO2 recovery usually looks
WhenWhat you may noticeMost people can
Day 0Redness, swelling, warmth, pinpoint bleeding and clear or straw-coloured seeping. Most people feel heat and tightness rather than pain.Rest at home; calls with the camera off.
Days 1–3The seeping settles and the surface turns bronzed and rough, like fine sandpaper. Swelling is worst in the mornings, especially around the eyes. Tight, itchy skin.Stay home or work remotely; an easy walk once the swelling eases.
Days 4–7Crusts flake and peel off by themselves, showing pink new skin. At Atelier crusting and shedding usually take five to ten days.Varies with depth and density; agreed with Dr SY beforehand.
Week 2 onwardsBy now the surface has usually closed. The pink new skin fades gradually over the following weeks and stays sensitive to UV for longer than it looks.Work and social plans once the surface has closed, on the timing agreed beforehand; mineral make-up once the clinic confirms closure. Strict sun protection continues.
When results showCollagen keeps remodelling beneath for months; resurfacing results continue to improve for three to six months. Pinkness is healing, not the result.Have the next scar step timed to healed skin at the follow-up visit.

Work And Plans

2. Work And Social Plans

Crusting and peeling show, and make-up cannot cover them, so pick dates when you can stay home or keep the camera off. The number of days depends on the depth planned for your scars, and Dr SY goes through it before treatment so leave can be arranged.

Home care in the meantime is on the CO2 laser aftercare page.

Slower Recovery

3. What Can Lengthen Recovery

  • Deeper or denser settings. More skin is vaporised, so the surface needs longer to close.
  • Picking. Pulling a crust off early is the most common reason a mark lingers after everything else has healed.
  • A cold sore flare. One of the more common problems after deep fractional CO2, which is why antiviral cover starts beforehand if you have had cold sores.
  • Infection or a burn. Both are easier to treat early; the signs are under when to contact the clinic.
  • Heat, sweat and water too soon. Exercise, swimming and saunas before the surface closes irritate open micro-wounds, raising the risk of infection and lasting redness.
  • Sun. UV on healing skin can trigger post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, more likely in Asian skin.

Events

4. Planning Around An Event

For a wedding, photo shoot or holiday, the question is how far ahead to have the laser. Give Dr SY your fixed dates at consultation so the session can be timed around them, and allow for pinkness that lingers after the crusts have gone. A trip somewhere hot or sunny is better after healing than during it.

In a scar plan with several steps, the CO2 stage is usually the most visible; how the steps fit together is on acne scar treatment downtime, and the protocol on Tetra Pro Scar³ acne scar treatment.

FAQ

CO2 Laser Downtime — Common Questions

Ask a Question
There is no single number: the depth and density chosen for your scars set how long the surface takes to close, and jobs differ. On the day the skin is red, swollen and seeping, and the crusting that follows is visible. At Atelier crusting and shedding usually last five to ten days. Dr SY discusses the likely time beforehand.
No. Clear or straw-coloured fluid from the treated columns early on is how a fractional wound normally looks, and it settles as the surface dries into a crust. Thick, yellow or bad-smelling discharge, increasing pain, or redness spreading beyond the treated area is different: message the clinic the same day.
Usually not. A bronzed, rough look in the first days is dried treated skin, and it sheds with the crusts. The darkening to watch for comes after healing: post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which is more common in Asian skin and when treated skin meets the sun. The clinic assesses it rather than lasering over it, and sun protection stays strict meanwhile.
Generally, yes. Depth and density decide how much skin is vaporised, and so how long the surface needs to close. Shallow passes over uneven texture close sooner than deep work on long-standing boxcar scars, so your healing time follows the settings chosen for your scars, not a standard timetable.
