BTX Downtime —
Pinpoint Marks, Then A Gradual Change

BTX usually leaves little for others to see: a small bump at each point that flattens quickly, and now and then a bruise. The change itself arrives over days. This page covers how you are likely to look, when you can be seen, and how Dr Sin Yong suggests timing treatment around an event.

Recovery Timeline

1. What You May Notice, Day By Day

Timing varies with the areas treated, the dose and your own muscles, and jaw slimming follows a slower course. Dosing itself is explained on the BTX treatment page.

A typical pattern after BTX for expression lines
WhenWhat you may noticeMost people can
Day 0A small bump at each point, usually flat within the hour, and mild redness. Pinpoint marks hard to see by evening; an occasional bruise, most often at the crow's feet.Go back to work the same day.
Days 1–3Marks fading; any bruise changing colour. A mild headache or heavy forehead is possible and usually passes. After jaw slimming, a slight ache when chewing.Work and socialise as usual.
Days 4–7Treated muscles softening, typically from days 3–7, sometimes one side before the other. Bruising usually settles within 3–7 days.Carry on as usual, without judging the result yet.
Week 2 onwardsFull effect at about two weeks; slight unevenness can be balanced at the two-week visit. After jaw slimming, chewing feels weaker; the shape has not changed yet.Attend the two-week visit.
When results showLines on movement softer at about two weeks, lasting about 3–4 months. Jaw narrowing from 4–6 weeks, reaching its endpoint at about three months.Judge the result then, not before.

Work And Social Plans

2. Back At Work The Same Day

For most people, BTX fits around a working day. The bumps have usually gone before you leave, the marks are pinpoint, and your expressions are unchanged on the day itself.

After jaw slimming, tough or chewy food can tire the jaw for the first few weeks, worth knowing before a long dinner. What to do meanwhile is in BTX aftercare.

Slower Recovery

3. What Can Draw Recovery Out

  • Blood thinners and some supplements. Blood thinners, aspirin, fish oil and similar supplements make a bruise more likely; Dr SY asks about them at the consultation. Never stop a prescribed medicine without asking the doctor who prescribed it.
  • The crow's feet, heat and alcohol. Bruises appear most often at the crow's feet, where the needle can cross a small vessel, and heat or alcohol on the day makes them more likely.
  • An effect in the wrong muscle. A drooping upper eyelid, a heavy or low brow, or a changed smile is not ordinary downtime. It is temporary, yet it can last for as long as the treatment effect does, so the clinic assesses and manages it. The signs are listed under when to contact the clinic.

Events And Travel

4. Planning Around Weddings, Photographs And Flights

Photographs. If your crow's feet are treated, leave time for a bruise there to fade before a shoot; injection bruising usually settles within 3–7 days.

Weddings and big occasions. Treatment the day before an event shows the marks but not the effect. How far ahead to book is answered below.

Flights. Flying is not usually restricted. If you will be abroad at two weeks, raise it before treatment; the options are in BTX aftercare.

FAQ

BTX Downtime — Common Questions

Ask a Question
Usually not on the day. The bumps at the injection points usually flatten within the hour and nothing about how your face moves changes straight away. The one thing that can show is a bruise, most often at the crow's feet, which make-up can cover once the points have closed. The softening itself arrives gradually over the following days.
A mild headache or a heavy feeling across the forehead in the first days is common and usually passes. It is thought to come from the injections and the change in muscle tone, not from the product spreading. If you need something, paracetamol is enough, provided it suits you. A headache that is severe, on one side only, or affecting your vision is different: report it to the clinic.
A drooping upper eyelid is uncommon. It happens when the toxin reaches the small muscle that lifts the lid, usually from frown-line points, and shows in the days after treatment as one lid sitting lower. It wears off only as the medicine does, which is why it is assessed rather than simply waited out. Prescription eye drops can help while it recovers. Message the clinic with photographs. If it comes with double vision, or difficulty swallowing, speaking or breathing, call 995 or go to the nearest emergency department instead.
Count back from the day. The softening is complete at about two weeks, and that visit is when any small balancing dose is given; that dose also needs some days to take effect. Leave time, too, for a bruise at the crow's feet to fade. Jaw slimming is judged at about three months, so it starts months earlier. Bring the date to your consultation so the plan can be timed backwards from it.
