Four Jobs, Four Tools

The phrase is used for almost every non-surgical body treatment, which is why two people who both want body sculpting can need entirely different things. Each meaning has its own sign at examination.

• Fat reduction. A soft pocket you can hold between finger and thumb, on the flanks, lower tummy, inner thigh or bra line, that has stayed while your weight has held steady.
• Muscle tone. A tummy, buttock or arm that looks soft and under-defined, with little fat to pinch over it. The muscle, not the fat, is what is missing.
• Skin tightening. Skin that tents when pinched and is slow to flatten again, often after pregnancy, weight change or with age. Thin, crinkled skin is a different finding again.
• Contour or shape. How an area reads against the ones around it: a buttock blurred by fullness at the lower back, a waist without a clear line, a tummy that sits forward. This is usually a combination of the other three.

A fifth finding sits outside all of them: a central bulge after pregnancy that domes when you sit up. That is a separation of the abdominal muscles, and it is assessed before any sculpting is planned; see postpartum tummy and diastasis.

Atelier uses five body treatments. Each is aimed at one tissue, and none is a weight-loss treatment.

Laser body sculpting usually refers to laser devices that heat fat through the skin. They are not used for body sculpting at Atelier. The body tools here are cooling, microwave, radiofrequency, radiofrequency with ultrasound, and an electromagnetic field. Focused ultrasound on its own (HIFU) is not offered for the body either; where ultrasound is part of a body plan, it is delivered together with radiofrequency through Svelte Touch.

Whatever the energy, the question that decides the result is the same: which tissue is being treated, and is it the one that is causing the problem? A laser, a cooling plate or an electromagnetic coil aimed at the wrong layer gives the same disappointing answer. Stretch marks, which are a surface scar rather than a contour problem, are planned on their own on stretch mark treatment.

Most bodies show two findings in the same area, so a plan often has two steps. The order follows a few rules.

1. Skin before deposit. Loose skin is treated while it can still recoil. Work on a firm deposit comes several weeks later, once the skin's response can be seen, because taking volume from under slack skin makes the slackness more visible.
2. Muscle with fat, not instead of it. New tone under a pinchable layer is felt more than seen, so Z-Sculpt is often paired with fat freezing or Onda Pro on the same area.
3. The midline first. On the tummy, a separation or hernia is looked for before anything else, because it changes every other step.
4. One change at a time. Steps are spaced so that each can be judged against your photographs before the next is added.
