Sagging Tummy, Buttocks and Arms —
Skin Or Fat

Loose skin on the lower tummy, below the buttock and along the upper arm can look alike in a mirror and still have different causes. This page explains how Atelier tells loose skin from fat and from true excess, which non-surgical options fit each, and when surgery is the right referral.

The Mechanism

Same Mirror, Different Problem

Book a Consultation

Pregnancy, weight change and age all loosen body skin, but what sits underneath varies. In one person the skin itself has lost its spring. In another, a thin layer of fat lies under skin that has also slackened. In a third, the skin still recoils well and a firm deposit sits beneath it.

These look similar when you stand in front of a mirror, yet each needs a different tool, and some need surgery rather than a device. Often more than one is present in the same area.

Finding One
Lost Recoil
Pinched, the skin stays tented and there is little beneath it. This is a skin problem.
Finding Two
Loose Skin Over Thin Fat
The skin is slack with a thin, soft layer under it. Typical after pregnancy or a moderate change in weight.
Finding Three
A Firm Deposit
A compact, resistant bulge under skin that still snaps back. This is a fat problem, not a skin problem.
Finding Four
True Excess
Hanging skin with no recoil, often after large weight loss. No device removes it.

Types

Pinch, Let Go, Watch

Dr Sin Yong looks at each area with you standing, then lying down. He pinches the skin, lets go and watches how quickly it returns. Tented skin points to a skin problem; a firm bulge points to a fat problem. Your history of weight change and pregnancy is part of the picture.

Specifications

Region
Lower tummy and above the navel; flanks; buttock fold and crease; upper arm from elbow to shoulder
Assessment
Standing and lying; pinch and recoil; abdominal wall check for separation or hernia; weight and pregnancy history
Modalities
Svelte Touch for loose skin; 4K Body Lift for contour after the skin; referral for excess skin, separation or hernia
Review
Skin treated first; deposit work several weeks later; 4K Body Lift contour assessed at 8–12 weeks
Type I
Tummy
The abdominal wall is checked first. A separation wider than two fingers, or a hernia, is a surgical question that no energy device changes.
Type II
Buttocks
The usual concern is a dropped fold and a deeper crease below the buttock. The skin and any fat or deposit are judged separately.
Type III
Arms
Assessed from elbow to shoulder. Loose inner-arm skin after 50 tends to be skin-led; a firm pad at the back of the arm tends to be a deposit.

The Decision

Skin First, Then Shape

Skin is treated while it can still recoil. Work on a firm deposit comes afterwards, usually several weeks later, once the skin's response can be seen.

Results vary from person to person, and none is promised. Papery, crepey arm skin is a thin dermis rather than looseness, and has its own page on crepey skin on the arms.

When to wait. None of these treatments is given in pregnancy, over implanted electronics such as a pacemaker, or over active skin infection. After a baby, treatment waits until breastfeeding has finished and your weight is stable, and until any caesarean scar has healed and settled. Body contouring is not weight loss, so it suits a weight that has stopped changing.

When to refer. Some needs are better met by a plastic surgeon: marked excess skin after major weight loss, a hanging fold that does not spring back, split abdominal muscles that need repair, a hernia, or the wish for one decisive change. These are questions for abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), brachioplasty (arm lift) or a body lift. Dr SY raises this at the first visit. Surgery, including liposuction, is not performed at Atelier.

Sagging Tummy Treatment

At Atelier

Treatment Options At Atelier

  • Svelte Touch delivers radiofrequency and ultrasound in one session. At Atelier it is used on the abdomen, flanks, upper arms, thighs and buttocks to firm loose skin, as a course with maintenance.
  • 4K Body Lift is Atelier's radiofrequency protocol for contour and firmness on the tummy, flanks, arms and thighs. It follows skin treatment, is planned over 4–6 sessions, and is not a weight-loss treatment.
  • Non-surgical BBL, Atelier's gluteal lifting without surgery, planned after assessment of the fold.
  • Tummy-specific planning, including after pregnancy and caesarean section, is set out on sagging tummy treatment. If you are unsure whether your muscles have separated, read postpartum tummy and diastasis.

Svelte Touch runs on a HIRONIC platform. Dr Sin Yong holds a Key Opinion Leader appointment with HIRONIC.

For the wider range of body options, see body contouring.

Safety

What To Expect Afterwards

Svelte Touch and the 4K Body Lift heat tissue, so redness, warmth and some swelling are expected; they settle over hours to days. With radiofrequency there is a small chance of a burn, or of an uneven patch, should cooling or skin contact fail.

Tell the clinic before treatment if you are pregnant, have a pacemaker or another implanted device, or have a skin infection in the area, as treatment is not given in these situations.

FAQ

Sagging Tummy, Buttocks and Arms — Common Questions

Ask a Question
Because it separates problems that look the same. Skin that stays tented with little beneath it has lost recoil, which is a skin problem. A firm bulge under skin that snaps back is a deposit, which is a fat problem. Loose skin over a thin soft layer is a mix of both. Which finding dominates decides which treatment leads.
The skin comes first, while it can still recoil. Work on the deposit follows several weeks later, once the skin's response can be judged. At Atelier the 4K Body Lift is the contouring step; it is planned over 4 to 6 sessions, and the change in contour is assessed at 8 to 12 weeks.
It may be, if the problem is loose skin with recoil left or a firm pad at the back of the arm. Both are assessed from elbow to shoulder. Marked hanging skin after large weight loss is different: it is a question for brachioplasty and is referred. Fine, papery crepe is a thin dermis and is planned on its own pathway.
The usual complaint is a dropped fold and a deeper crease below the buttock. Atelier's non-surgical BBL is gluteal lifting without surgery. Svelte Touch is used to lift and firm the skin over the buttocks, and Z-Sculpt uses electromagnetic stimulation to work the gluteal muscles. Surgical buttock lifts and fat transfer are not performed at Atelier.
Dr SY will say so at your first visit. A plastic surgeon is the better route for marked excess skin after large weight loss, a hanging fold that does not recoil, a separated abdominal wall that needs repair, a hernia, or the wish for one decisive change. Abdominoplasty, brachioplasty, body lifts and liposuction are not performed at Atelier, and no device removes true excess skin.
They are not given during pregnancy, over a pacemaker or other implanted electronics, or over active skin infection. After a birth, treatment waits until breastfeeding has finished, your weight is stable and any caesarean scar has fully healed. Body contouring is not a weight-loss treatment, so it suits a weight that has settled. A wide separation of the abdominal muscles is assessed for surgical repair.
