FSX Laser vs VF Lift for Droopy Eyelids —
How They Differ

FSX laser vs VF Lift for droopy eyelids is really a question of which layer has changed. FSX Laser LCLR works on lid and brow skin that has lost its spring; the VF Lift – Vertical Facelift uses monopolar radiofrequency to help a descended brow sit higher. A lid edge that sits low over the iris is a third problem that neither treats, and Dr Sin Yong refers it for a surgical opinion.

How Each Works

Resurfacing The Skin, Or Raising The Brow

FSX Laser LCLR is a non-ablative fractional laser that combines 1540 nm erbium glass, which heats narrow columns in the dermis to prompt collagen remodelling, with 1927 nm thulium, which works nearer the surface on texture. Around the eye it is used for skin that has turned crepey and loose: fine creasing, enlarged pores and a little surplus folding towards the lashes in someone whose brow still sits well. Details are on the FSX Laser page.

The VF Lift – Vertical Facelift runs on Volnewmer, a CLASSYS monopolar radiofrequency platform working at 6.78 MHz with continuous water cooling. For the eye area the relevant zones are the forehead and the outer brow, treated in upward, vertical lines so the tissue is encouraged to lift rather than only tighten. The full protocol is on the VF Lift page.

On the evidence, a randomised split-face study in 22 Asian women compared monopolar radiofrequency with water cooling against cryogen cooling and reported comparable lifting, with less pain on the water-cooled side (Roh 2025). Volnewmer's US clearance (K240248) covers electrocoagulation and haemostasis of soft tissue; it does not mention eyelid lifting.

FSX Laser And VF Lift Compared

The table compares how each works around the eye, not which is better; the right one depends on the examination.

Which Problem

Two Mirror Tests, Three Answers

Stand in front of a mirror, look straight ahead and try two things. They are a screen, not a diagnosis; how the three causes are told apart in full is on droopy and hooded eyelids.

  • Lift the brow tail with a fingertip. If the eye opens noticeably, the brow has dropped and is pushing lid skin down. That points to the VF Lift.
  • Gently pinch the lid skin. If the brow lift changed little but the pinch gathers obvious loose skin, the skin itself has lost recoil. That points to FSX.
  • Check where the lid edge meets the coloured iris. If the edge sits low, especially on one side, or the eye still looks sleepy with the brow held up, the lifting muscle may have weakened. That is ptosis, and no energy device corrects it.

Using Both

Lift First, Resurface Second

After about 45, a lower brow and laxer lid skin often appear together. When both are present, the VF Lift is done before FSX, to reposition the brow, and FSX follows to treat whatever lid skin remains. Resurfacing skin that is about to move would be the wrong order. The gap between the two is set by how the skin responds to the first step, not by a calendar.

Neither treatment is performed over the eye itself. Eye shields are used for FSX, and thin skin near the orbit is treated conservatively with the VF Lift.

When Neither Fits

When The Answer Is Surgical

A low lid margin from a weakened lifting muscle is assessed by an oculoplastic surgeon, and Atelier refers. Marked surplus skin resting on the lashes is usually a question for upper blepharoplasty. Eyelid surgery is not performed at Atelier. A lid that drooped suddenly, on one side only or with double vision needs prompt medical assessment before anything cosmetic is considered.

Risks to know

  • FSX: temporary redness, swelling and flaking. In Fitzpatrick III to V skin the main risk is post-inflammatory darkening, so settings are tested and sun avoidance is strict.
  • VF Lift: passing redness and tenderness; rarely a small burn or surface irregularity, reduced by the water-cooled tip and light settings near the orbit.

How Atelier Decides

The Examination Chooses

Dr SY looks at brow position, lid skin and lid margin with your face at rest and moving, and checks the temples, since a hollow there can let the brow sit lower. The plan may be the VF Lift, FSX, both in order, or neither with a referral. Where the brow is the problem, BTX to the muscles that pull it down or temple support may also be discussed; the non-surgical eyelid lift page explains how these fit together. Dr Sin Yong holds a Key Opinion Leader appointment with CLASSYS, which makes Volnewmer.

FAQ

FSX Laser vs VF Lift — Common Questions

Ask a Question
Neither is better in general; they treat different causes. If lifting your brow tail with a fingertip opens the eye, the brow has descended and the VF Lift – Vertical Facelift fits. If the brow sits well but pinching the lid skin gathers loose, crepey skin, FSX fits. After about 45 both often apply, and the examination confirms which, or whether a low lid edge means neither.
Because the brow decides where the lid skin ends up. Raising a descended brow first changes how much lid skin is left folding towards the lashes, and FSX then treats what remains. Resurfacing first would mean treating skin that is about to shift position. How long to leave between the two depends on your skin's response to the first step and is set at the follow-up visit.
FSX is used on lid and brow skin with protective eye shields in place, and the energy is never directed onto the eye itself. Settings around the eye are conservative because the skin is thin, and in darker skin types they are tested to limit post-inflammatory darkening. Expect redness and fine flaking for a few days, and plan strict sun protection around each session.
A lid edge that sits lower on one side, or an eye that still looks sleepy when the brow is held up, suggests the muscle that lifts the lid has weakened. That is ptosis, and neither FSX nor the VF Lift corrects it. Dr SY refers it for a surgical opinion. A droop that appeared suddenly or comes with double vision needs prompt medical assessment.
