Pico Laser Questions —
Answered Without The Hype

Pico laser questions in Singapore tend to circle the same themes: what it is, what it really does, how long the redness lasts, and why some skin ends up darker. This article answers them in turn, drawing on how Dr Sin Yong plans pico laser treatment at Atelier, and is plain about what the laser cannot do.

The Basics

What Is Pico Laser?

Book a Consultation

"Pico" is a pulse length, not a brand or a single treatment. A pico laser fires pulses measured in picoseconds, trillionths of a second, so pigment or ink is broken mainly by a pressure effect rather than by heat. Less heat spreads into the skin, which matters because inflammation is what leaves brown marks in Asian skin. At Atelier the device is the DEKA TORO; the mechanism is explained on the pico laser page.

The same laser works in three quite different modes: spot treatment for single marks, low-energy toning across the face for diffuse pigment, and fractional delivery for texture. Most confusion online comes from comparing one mode's experience with another's.

Benefits And Limits

Pico Laser Benefits, And Where They Stop

Where a pico laser is useful:

  • Discrete pigment such as freckles and sun spots, treated spot by spot (pico laser for freckles).
  • Diffuse uneven tone, on gentle toning settings.
  • Tattoo ink (tattoo removal).
  • Fine texture and the look of pores, through fractional delivery.

Where it is not the answer:

  • Pores: fractional pico can soften their appearance, but it does not shrink them directly, and response varies.
  • Deeper acne scars: it does not treat the walls of boxcar scars, the tethers under rolling scars or ice pick tracts. Those need subcision, TCA CROSS, fractional CO2 or RF microneedling; acne scar treatment sets out the sequence.
  • Red marks: a pico laser targets brown pigment, not blood vessels (red vs brown marks).
  • Skin whitening: it targets abnormal pigment and does not change your natural skin colour.
  • Melasma: it can lighten visible pigment, but melasma is managed, not removed.

Day By Day

Pico Laser Downtime, Day By Day

There is no single number of days, because each mode heals differently:

  • Toning: pinkness and warmth that usually settle within hours.
  • Spot: each mark darkens, then a fine crust forms and flakes off over several days. The spot looks darker before it looks lighter.
  • Fractional: pinpoint redness and mild swelling, then a rough, sandpapery feel that lasts longer than either of the others.

Throughout, leave crusts alone, keep active skincare off until the surface settles, and wear broad-spectrum sunscreen every day. The full timeline is on pico laser downtime.

Darkening

Why Some Skin Turns Darker Afterwards

New darkening after a pico laser is usually post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The common causes are energy set too high, sessions repeated too soon, sun on freshly treated skin, and melasma mistaken for a sun spot and treated like one.

It can appear weeks after a session, when the skin looked calm the next day, and it can take months to fade. Adding another laser session or a strong active while the skin is inflamed tends to make it worse. It should be assessed and allowed to settle, not treated over.

Toning

Pico Toning Is Not A Facial

Because toning feels gentle, it is sometimes booked like a monthly facial. It is a medical treatment with a cumulative dose. Frequent repeated toning of the same area has been linked with pale, mottled spots, which are harder to correct than the original pigment.

Toning at Atelier has a defined aim, a check after each session and a point at which it stops. How often any maintenance happens depends on how the skin responds, not on a calendar, and daily sun protection does more to keep results than extra sessions. Laser toning vs pico laser compares nanosecond and picosecond toning, and carbon laser peel covers a different, surface-level treatment that is often confused with both.

Before You Book

What Online Comments Cannot Tell You

Accounts of pico laser online often compare a quick toning pass on preset settings with a planned course of spot or fractional work, as if they were the same treatment. Neither tells you what your own pigment needs. At Atelier, Dr SY examines the skin first, names each type of pigment, then chooses wavelength, mode and energy; a test spot is used where the reaction is hard to predict.

Questions worth asking anywhere: what is this pigment, which mode and wavelength will be used and why, and who sees you if the skin darkens? Any mole that is changing, bleeding or unlike the others is examined before a laser is considered. The number of visits is covered in how many pico laser sessions, and the device comparison in PicoSure vs pico laser. Dr Sin Yong holds a Key Opinion Leader appointment with DEKA.

FAQ

More Pico Laser Questions

Ask a Question
Yes, for suitable pigment. Sun spots on the backs of the hands, scattered marks on the neck and pigment on the back can all be treated, with settings adjusted for skin that is thinner or heals more slowly than the face. The same rule applies everywhere: each mark is identified first, and the area is kept out of the sun while it heals.
No. A pico laser targets pigment that is excess or abnormal, such as a sun spot or post-inflammatory marks. It does not change the colour your skin is meant to be, and it is not a skin-whitening treatment. Uneven tone can look more even once dark patches lighten, but the underlying skin shade stays the same.
Yes. Melasma can darken with visible light and heat, not only ultraviolet. Tinted sunscreens containing iron oxides block part of the visible light, so they suit melasma better than a clear formula. Used every day, with a hat and shade, they protect the result of any pico laser or topical treatment far better than extra laser sessions would.
Not without an examination first, and often not at all. A mole is a collection of pigment cells, not just pigment, and lasering it removes the visible clue a doctor needs to judge whether it is harmless. A mole that is changing or unlike your others is examined with a dermatoscope and may be referred; the mole removal page covers the options.
