TCA CROSS Aftercare —
Leave The Crusts Where They Are

TCA CROSS places a strong acid inside individual ice-pick scars, so each treated point frosts white, then crusts while new collagen forms underneath. Your part is to keep the points clean, moist and shaded, and to leave every crust alone. Dr Sin Yong's written aftercare comes first.

Day One

1. The First 24 Hours

Book a Consultation

Straight after treatment each scar carries a dense white frost, with stinging, redness and a little swelling. The frost fades within hours, and over the next day or two each point darkens.

Do

  • Wash gently, then pat the skin dry.
  • Put the moisturiser or ointment supplied by the clinic on the treated points.
  • Start sun protection now: shade and a hat outdoors, with daily broad-spectrum sunscreen.

Avoid

  • Rubbing or scrubbing the points.
  • Make-up over the points.
  • Hot showers on the face, saunas and sweaty exercise.
  • Retinoids, exfoliating acids and other actives.

The Crusting Week

2. The First Week

From about day two each point carries a small dark crust, protecting the collagen that is starting to fill the scar from its base. Crusts usually separate by themselves after five to seven days. Pulling one off early can turn an improving scar into a pigmented one.

  • Keep the points moist with what you were given.
  • No picking, scrubbing, peels or cleansing brushes.
  • Itching is common as crusts lift; try not to scratch.
  • Sleep face up on a clean pillowcase.
  • No facials or other treatments on the same skin.

More in the post-laser recovery guide.

Skin And Sun

3. Skincare And Sun Protection

Once the crusts have gone the points are often pink for a few weeks. Post-inflammatory darkening is the main risk in medium and darker skin; after TCA CROSS it shows as small dark dots rather than a patch, and usually fades over two to four months.

  • Broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning, reapplied outdoors, with shade, for weeks.
  • No deliberate sun; a beach holiday soon after is a reason to move the session.
  • If you were given a pigment-calming cream for the course, use it as directed.
  • Retinoids, acids, scrubs and peels wait until the clinic says the skin has healed.

A point that darkens is shown to the clinic, not treated at home with stronger brightening creams. See post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Everyday Life

4. Exercise, Make-Up And Flights

Exercise and heat. Sweaty exercise, saunas and hot showers on the face are avoided for the first days after each session; ask the clinic when your usual routine can return.

Make-up. Around the points, not over them, until the crusts have separated, usually after about a week.

Being seen. How the dots look that week, and working through it, are covered in downtime across an acne scar plan.

Flights. Usually fine the next day, with aftercare continued on the trip.

Safety

5. When To Contact The Clinic

Frost, stinging, redness, mild swelling, small crusts, itching and pink points are expected. Message the clinic the same day for any of these:

  • A blister, or a point spreading wider than the treated scar.
  • Severe pain.
  • Thick, yellow or oozing crusts, or redness spreading between the points.
  • A cluster of small painful sores.
  • Fever.
  • Later: a point clearly darker or paler than the skin around it, a point that widens or turns into a dent, or a raised or firm area.

Send a photograph by WhatsApp to +65 8023 7170 (Monday to Saturday, 11:00–20:00), marked urgent if it is. A blister, an open area, a fever or anything getting worse needs a doctor that day: if the clinic is closed or cannot fit you in, go to the nearest hospital emergency department, wherever you are. FAQ

TCA CROSS Aftercare — Common Questions

Ask a Question
Leave the others alone, keep that point clean and moist with the product you were given, and keep it shaded. A crust that comes off before it is ready can raise the risk of a dark mark, as picking does, so mention it at your next visit. Message the clinic sooner if the point oozes, blisters, spreads beyond the scar or becomes painful.
The pink is new skin over a tract that is still healing, and it often lasts a few weeks. It does not mean the scar has filled or failed: the scar base is judged at your next visit, not from the crust or the colour. Keep up daily sunscreen and shade through this phase, because pink skin darkens easily in the sun.
Sessions are typically six to eight weeks apart, over a usual course of three to five, so each tract heals and fills before it is treated again. Treating sooner stacks inflammation on inflammation and raises the risk of dark marks. Subcision is usually done before CROSS or in the same visit, and broad resurfacing is timed so it does not disturb healing tracts.
Flying the next day is usually fine. Take the moisturiser or ointment you were given and keep the routine going while away: gentle cleansing, crusts left alone, make-up only around the points. Plan shade, a hat and broad-spectrum sunscreen for your destination. If a point blisters, oozes or spreads, message the clinic and get seen locally the same day.
