Dermal Filler Downtime —
Settled Before It Is Judged

After hyaluronic acid filler, how much swelling and bruising shows depends mostly on the area. Here is how you are likely to look over the first fortnight and when you can be seen. Dr Sin Yong plans each treatment around your face, so the timings are a guide.

What to do in each phase is in dermal filler aftercare; planning is on the dermal filler page.

A typical pattern after hyaluronic acid filler; timing varies by area and person
WhenWhat you may noticeMost people can
Day 0Mild swelling and tenderness at the entry points, perhaps a small bruise. Treated lips can stay numb for a while from the local anaesthetic most lip fillers contain.Carry on with ordinary activity; there is no wound to dress.
Days 1–3Lip swelling is at its greatest, often uneven. Cheeks, chin and jawline feel firm; cheeks can be tender when you chew or smile.Work and most plans, if visible swelling does not bother you.
Days 4–7Mild swelling and bruising usually settle within 3 to 7 days; under the eyes, up to about two weeks.Social plans, once a bruise has faded or can be covered.
Week 2 onwardsSwelling and early firmness have usually settled, and the shape can be judged.Attend the two-week check, where any small adjustment is decided.
When results showVisible within 24 to 72 hours; the settled result is judged at about two weeks. It lasts 6 to 18 months depending on product and placement, and varies from person to person.Have what remains assessed before more is added.

Work And Social Life

2. Work And Social Plans

How much shows depends on the area:

  • Lips. They swell more than any other site, and bruises show readily through the thin skin.
  • Under the eyes. Puffiness, and more bruising, because the skin is thin and vessels lie near the surface. A blue-grey tint that does not fade like a bruise may be the Tyndall effect.
  • Cheeks, chin and jawline. Mostly firmness and pressure; any bruise sits at the entry point.
  • Nose. The bridge can look slightly wider and pinker for a day or two. Skin colour matters most here.
  • Temples. Bruising is common, as several vessels run near the surface.

Slower Recovery

3. What Can Lengthen Recovery

  • Heat too early. Sun, saunas, steam and hard exercise in the first days prolong swelling and bruising.
  • Blood thinners. Blood-thinning medicines and supplements make bruising more likely. Declare them, but never stop a prescribed one without asking the doctor who prescribed it.
  • Pressing or massaging. Product can move before the tissue settles.
  • Evening out early. Adding product to a side that looks fuller in the first days adds a second problem.

A complication changes the timetable. Call the clinic if swelling grows rather than settles, an area becomes hot, red and more painful by the day, a cold sore flares, or a tender lump appears well after treatment. White, dusky, purple or net-like skin, or worsening pain, is not downtime: contact the clinic at once for a same-day assessment, or out of hours go to the nearest emergency department. Any change in vision is an emergency: call 995 or go to the nearest hospital emergency department, not to the clinic. See filler vascular occlusion: warning signs.

Events And Photographs

4. Planning Around Events

Because the shape is judged at about two weeks, with any adjustment after that, book well ahead of a wedding, a shoot or a key presentation. Lips and the under-eye area, which swell and bruise the most, need the widest margin.

If you live overseas, plan to be here for the two-week check. Mention any date that matters when you book; the appointment is described in what to expect: dermal fillers.

FAQ

Dermal Filler Downtime — Common Questions

Ask a Question
Lip tissue holds more swelling than any other treated area, and it is greatest over the first one to three days, often more on one side. That fullness is not the result: the shape is judged at the two-week check, once it has gone down. Swelling that keeps increasing instead of settling, or unevenness with worsening pain or a change in skin colour, needs a same-day call.
Usually, yes. Most people return to ordinary activity the same day. What decides it is how visible your swelling or bruising is, and that depends on the area: lips and under-eyes tend to show more, cheeks, chin and jawline less. A bruise can be covered with make-up once the entry points have closed.
The change is visible within 24 to 72 hours, but swelling and early firmness hide the true shape, and the two sides rarely settle at the same rate. That is why Dr SY judges the result at about two weeks and decides on any small adjustment then.
It is tight. The settled shape is judged at about two weeks, and any adjustment comes after that check. Lips and the under-eye area swell and bruise the most, and under-eye puffiness can take about two weeks to settle. Tell the clinic the date when you book, so the timing can be planned with you.
