Pico Laser Aftercare —
Leave The Crust Alone

Care after pico laser follows the mode used: toning, spot or fractional. In each case, keep the skin cool and untouched, let any crust lift by itself, and shield the face from the sun every day. Dr Sin Yong gives written aftercare matched to your session, and it comes before this guide.

Day One

1. The First 24 Hours

Book a Consultation

A spot treated with pico turns darker soon afterwards: that is pigment lifting, not damage. How each mode looks over the coming days is on the pico laser downtime page.

Do

  • Keep the area cool, clean and untouched. A cool compress eases warmth.
  • Wash with lukewarm water and a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser, pat dry rather than rub, and finish with a plain moisturiser.
  • Wear a hat and keep to the shade outdoors.
  • Follow the written instructions for your mode.

Avoid

  • Retinoids, exfoliating acids, vitamin C, brightening creams and scrubs.
  • Hot showers on the face, saunas and steam rooms for the rest of the day, and heavy sweating for a few days.
  • Alcohol: it keeps redness going for longer and adds to inflammation in Fitzpatrick III to V skin.

Days Two To Seven

2. The First Week

Over each treated spot, a thin crust forms and then lifts by itself over the following days. Leave it be, in the shower and on the pillow too: pulling it off early is a common reason a spot heals darker or lighter than its surroundings. The post-laser recovery guide covers the heavier crusting after resurfacing lasers such as CO2; for pico, follow this page and your written instructions.

  • Keep scrubs, cleansing brushes, retinoids and exfoliating acids off the area until the skin has closed and is no longer pink.
  • Avoid facials, extractions, microneedling and other laser or light treatments on the area.
  • No swimming while a crust is still present.
  • Sleep face-up on a clean pillowcase until the crusts have gone.

Skin And Sun

3. Skincare And Sun Protection

In Asian skin, daily sunscreen is the centre of aftercare after pico laser. Use a broad-spectrum product each morning, reapply it outside, and keep to the shade at midday. Where melasma is part of the plan, choose one tinted with iron oxides. No deliberate tanning while you heal, and ideally not between visits.

Prescription pigment creams such as hydroquinone or tretinoin restart only when the clinic says so; ask rather than assume.

Everyday Life

4. Exercise And Make-Up

Exercise. Light activity is fine from the next day. Hard training, hot classes and heavy sweating wait a few days.

Make-up. After toning, it can go back on once the skin has calmed, often by the next day. After spot or fractional work, wait until the surface has closed and the crusts are gone.

Your follow-up. The first week shows the skin healing; the outcome comes later. Your follow-up visit is timed to judge pigment clearance.

Safety

5. When To Contact The Clinic

Redness, darker spots, fine crusts and mild itching are expected. The signs below are not.

Contact the clinic the same day

  • A blister, or a crust that becomes thick, yellow or oozing.
  • Pain, swelling or warmth that is building rather than settling.
  • Redness spreading past the treated area, a cold sore near it, discharge or a fever.

WhatsApp +65 8023 7170 (Monday to Saturday, 11:00–20:00) with your treatment date. If you cannot reach the clinic, see another doctor the same day; outside clinic hours, take urgent signs to the nearest hospital emergency department.

Book an assessment

  • A treated spot that heals clearly darker or lighter than the skin around it.
  • Dark patches appearing weeks later, especially on the cheeks.
  • A raised, firm or thickened area where a spot was treated.

These are not emergencies. Keep to strict sun protection and do not have them treated over in the meantime. See pico laser complications and complication care.

FAQ

Pico Laser Aftercare — Common Questions

Ask a Question
Contact the clinic that treated you, or another doctor, before putting anything new on the skin. Note what you can: the device, the mode, any wavelength you were told and the date. Keep sun protection strict and leave the area untreated meanwhile; uneven healing or fresh darkening is examined in good light before anything further is planned.
Once the treated surface is intact and no longer looks pink, and only when the clinic confirms it, because the right moment differs between toning, spot and fractional treatment. Until then, a gentle cleanser, a plain moisturiser and sunscreen are all the skin needs. If unsure, ask before restarting.
While crusts are present, sleep face-up on a clean pillowcase, so they are not rubbed off before they are ready. A crust protects the new skin underneath and comes away by itself, which is why leaving it alone matters most. After toning alone, sleeping position makes little difference once the skin has cooled.
No. Darkening that shows after healing, often weeks later, is usually post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. It can follow inflammation, sun on freshly treated skin, or energy that was too high for the skin type. It needs to be assessed rather than treated over, so leave stronger products alone, keep sun protection strict and message the clinic to arrange a visit.
